Bad Gastein

Bad Gastein was one of the first tourist centers of Austria. It is situated in the middle of the Hohe Tauern National Park and has a whole different character than other Alpine towns. Gasteiner Ache is a small fast flowing river that cuts Bad Gastein in two halves. Bad is “spa” in English and with 18 hot springs for thermal hydrotherapy it is the premier spa town of Austria and one of the great spa towns of Europe. The tourist industry and natural healing started in the 15th century and Bad Gastein is part of the medieval tourist map. Royalty and aristocrats flocked here around the turn of the 19th century. It is located on the north slope of the Tauern massif in one of the most scenic spots in Austria.

Bad Gastein is a summer retreat and also a beautiful center for winter sports. Skiing is on par with that of St. Moritz in Switzerland with plenty of chairlifts and gondolas. Many establishments on the slope offer warmth, food, and strong drink.
