All over the world we are fascinated by architecture. There's a huge variety of buildings all over the world, some small, some colourful and some still being built. Here at hoppa we decided to look into some of the most famous buildings around the world that have been under construction for a long time and still aren't complete.

Sagrada Familia

One of the most famous landmarks around the world, the Sagrada Familia, is located in Barcelona, Spain. This building is a Roman Catholic Church constructed by Francisco Paula de Villa in 1882. Antoni Gaudí begun working on the cathedral in 1883 and became Achitect Director the following year. Throughout the years there has been a civil war which destroyed parts of the cathedral plus a fire in 2011 that destroyed parts inside the cathedral. The orginial plan was to have 18 spires, the final spires that will be built will make the cathedral the tallest in Europe, standing at just over 172 meters. The interior design is phenomnal, there's colourful stain glass windows to allow the light to shine in, so much detail has been put into the deisgn of the cathedral, it's well worth a visit.

The big question of course is when will it be complete? There is no set date however an estimate year is 2032, that means it would have been under construction for 150 years! If you would love to visit this amazing landmark, you can buy tickets online from the official site here.

Cathedral of Saint John the Divine

The Cathedral of Saint John the Divine is located in Manhattan, New York. It was designed in 1888 and work begun in 1892. In 1909 the design and style was changed to Gothic Revival. It is the fourth largest Christian Church in the world, reaching heights of 232ft (70.7m).

The church first opened in 1941, the construction was slowed down over the years due to both world wars. A fire broke out in 2001 which caused a lot of damage and repairs needed. It re-opened in 2008. The building still remains unfinished, the ceiling inside is 'temporary' however there is no date for the cathedral to be completed. Back in 1921, the cathedral was predicted to take 700 years to build. You are able to visit the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine, more information is availble on the offical website here

Ryugyong Hotel

The Ryugyonh Hotel is located in Pyongyang, North Korea. They begun building in 1987, however in 1992 North Korea faced an econimic crisis and all construction came to a halt. The construction started again in 2008 and was planned to open in 2012 but it didn't happen. The building stands at 1,080ft tall, it was intended to have revolving restaurants at the top giving a 360 degree view of the city. If it was opened in the 80's like it was intended to be, it would of become the tallest hotel in the world. The tallest hotel in the world today is the JW Marriott Marquis in Dubai. The Ryugyong Hotel is still unfinished and not open to the public.

Crazy Horse Memorial

Now this isn't exactly a building however we felt we had to include this awesome memorial, located in South Dakota. The Crazy Horse Memorial is a mountain moument, the finished sculpture will be of the Oglala Lakota warrior, Crazy Horse, riding his horse and pointing ahead. Crazy Horse was a Native American war leader of the Oglala Lakota. They began creating the sculpture in 1948 and once it's completed it will be the worlds largest sculpture, reaching heights of 87 feet (27m). There is no set completion date and is still far off being complete...
