For many people around the world, the Christmas holidays are always a special and nostalgic time of year. It’s a time to be with family and friends, celebrate all the hard work of the past year, bust out the mince pies and eggnog and sink into familiar traditions. Perhaps those traditions are decorating cards, hanging the tinsel, baking cookies and cakes, shopping for gifts and trimming the house in flashing lights! These rituals can help bring the holiday spirit to life. And, it’s these holiday traditions, no matter how humble or grand, that mark our memories with that warm and fuzzy feeling that this time of year inspires. <img alt='xmas_tree' src='https://www.hoppa.com/resource/blog/uploads/2015/12/xmas_tree-e1450865003570.jpg' style='height:427px; width:1000px' /> In the spirit of the season, members from hoppa’s staff have shared their favourite holiday traditions, both past and present. It’s our way of sharing a bit of ourselves at this sharing time of year!<hr /><a href='https://www.hoppa.com/resource/blog/uploads/2015/12/michele.jpg'><img alt='michele' src='https://www.hoppa.com/resource/blog/uploads/2015/12/michele.jpg' style='height:50px; width:50px' /></a>Michele Tommasi, Marketing ManagerI might not reflect the entire Italian population but this is what we used to do with my family during Christmas. We have a huge lunch with my parents and relatives, around 2-3 hours, then we start to eat our best traditional deserts which are Pandoro with chocolate and Panettone. After that we start playing different games such as ‘Tombola’ (known as ‘bingo’) and other different cards game. I was born in 1990 & have been going to visit them in the holidays ever since. We used to visit with the whole family, around 15 of us would stay & as a kid it was insanely fun. When I first started visiting the Algarve it was a quiet rural place without the mass tourism we see now. Unfortunately my grandparents moved back to the UK in 2005 due to ill health and it would seem the tradition would stop. However in 2008 my parents purchased an apartment as their retirement present and now live there for six months of the year. I now still visit them every year in Villamora and we eat at a gold mine of a restaurant called “Marufo’s”. It serves traditional Portuguese Peri Peri chicken and it’s the best I’ve ever had! This has fast become a massive tradition for myself, brother and our girlfriends. In the early hours of the morning we would excitedly collect bait and prepare our fishing lines. We would journey to our secret fishing spot and have a quiet relaxing day with a picnic. On Christmas day we always go to church in the morning with the family, then all meet up together (cousins, aunties etc) at our house. My mum and my aunties would be cooking Syrian food while me, my brothers and cousins would all sit together and hang around. Open stocking presents. Head down the wooden hill to greet the family. Breakfast of Eggs Benedict and a glass of Bucks Fizz. The chaps of the house retire to the local pub for a couple of looseners before lunch, which Mother prepares from around 10am. Head home to feast at midday. Queen’s speech at 3pm followed by a couple of rounds of Trivial Pursuit. Board games away in time for cold cuts and chutney circa 6:30pm. Evening is spent Port sipping and nut nibbling until the sandman comes a-calling. I have a very small family, so on Christmas Eve my sister and her fiancee would come round my house, we would go for drinks. Christmas morning is always fun, opening presents whilst my mum cooks breakfast. Early afternoon I visit my dad and spend time opening presents at his house. Then for the rest of the afternoon, I have Christmas dinner with my mum and step-dad, then fall asleep in front of the TV watching Christmas films! My family and I would make the drive from Washington D.C. to Orlando, Florida to see my dad’s side of the family, my aunts, uncles, grandparents and all-female cast of cousins. We always celebrate Christmas on Christmas Eve. All the cousins would run around outside and play by the lake down the road until we were called for dinner. Our Christmas feast always centres around salmon, not entirely sure why but I love it! After dinner my grandmother would ring the “Christmas bell” to signal that all the presents were ‘magically’ under the tree. This was always followed by a flurry of wrapping paper and happy squeals from us kids.
