Although the island has been producing wine for some two thousand years, its number of vineyards shrunk dramatically in the 20th-century, leaving Mallorca wines relatively unknown off the island. There are two denominations of origin on Mallorca, Binissalem in the centre of the island, and Pla i Llevant on the eastern side. While the majority of vines grow only in these two areas, some vineyards are farmed outside of this system, and are know as vina de la tierra. The island is home to over two-dozen outstanding bodegas that produce a variety of blended and original wines made from indigenous vines. Some bodegas are small and have been family-run for generations, others like the Jose Luis Ferrer wine estate, are large enterprises. The oldest winery in Mallorca, Hereus de Ribas, was established in 1711 in Binissalem, and has been run by the same family ever since. Some wonderful wines to look out for are: Bodegas Anima Negra’s AN/2 2008 which is described as “silky and elegant with intense flavors of mature fruit;” and Toni Gelabert’s Torre des Canong Blanc which is described as a “highly structured and complex white wine (and) is without a doubt one of the best in Spain.” A few days sipping your way through Mallorca’s wineries and you will agree, when it comes to Mallorcan wine, it’s all about quality over quantity.<a class='img' href='https://www.hoppa.com/resource/blog/uploads/2015/11/mallorca-vineyards.jpg'><img class='aligncenter wp-image-665 size-full' src='https://www.hoppa.com/resource/blog/uploads/2015/11/mallorca-vineyards-e1447929684772.jpg' alt='mallorca vineyards' width='1000' height='467' /></a>Eat: Tucked away in a 200-year-old windmill in St. Lorenc de Cardassar is Mallorca’s hidden gastronomic gem, Es Moli d’en Bou.
