Tenagua

The island of La Palma, one of the Canary Islands belonging to Spain, is said to be the steepest island in the World. Tenagua sits on the north east coast where the terrain slopes relatively gently and is, therefore, comparatively verdant. A reasonably large resort, Tenagua sprawls across this landscape, with pretty white buildings dotted here and there. Reached from here via winding, mountain roads are fabulous walks around the volcanic National Parks. Find your way along the many old mule trails that used to take goods from one town to another across the rocky terrain and you will find pretty, wild flowers in the Spring and summer, set against the dramatic landscape. Everywhere are crops, from bananas to asparagus, with forests of pine trees for some respite from the sun.

For the less energetic, there is much to do here, including sunbathing on black sands, swimming in cool waters, boating, paragliding and more. You’ll find delicious dishes made with the fresh produce farmed in the local area, all washed down with fine wines. The town is within easy reach of the capital, Santa Cruz de la Palma, where you’ll find fascinating old cobbled streets lined with colourful balconied houses and ancient buildings.
