Chapelle D Abondance

Five kilometres along a picturesque valley from Châtel, the curiously named and attractive old farming community of Chapelle D Abondance was once just a rustic backwater of the Portes du Soleil. This huge network of ski areas – one of the biggest in the world – extends far and wide across the French-Swiss border, close to Lake Geneva. Recently it has been placed more firmly on the circuit map after being linked by gondola and three chairlifts with the Swiss resort of Torgon. Chapelle D Abondance, at 1,010m, also has its own small ski area of attractive, gladed pistes and is an attractive prospect at weekends if the main Portes du Soleil resorts become really busy.

The resort overall is perfect for families with young children as the slopes are mostly gentle and the ski school employs patient staff and they get you going quickly. La Chapelle D Abondance is only 65 km from the airport in Geneva. The village has a sanctuary and the monks still make Abondance cheese to an ancient recipe.

Further afield (5km) there is the main town in the area Chatel where a number of non skiing winter sports can be enjoyed including a super snow park, snowshoe hiking, ice rink gym and outdoor concerts. Horse drawn carriages are a great drawcard and for shopping there is a market on Wednesdays. The village has a few restaurants of which one of the best is Les Cornettes, where good food and value are a watchword. Le Fer Rouge is also a great choice for lovers of French country cuisine. For something more than a quiet drink in a hotel bar, try some of the nearby resorts.
