Runaway Bay

Once a mere satellite of Ocho Rios, Runaway Bay , 16km (10 miles) west of Ocho Rios, has become a destination in its own right, with white-sand beaches that are much less crowded than those in Ocho Rios.

Since you're so far removed from the action such as it is in Ocho Rios, you stay at Runaway Bay mainly if youre interested in hanging out at a particular resort. It is especially recommended for those who want to escape from the hordes descending on Ocho Rios, where cruise ship crowds and aggressive vendors can intrude on your solitude.

The beaches are inviting and far less crowded than in the tourist hotspots, and you'll find the selection of water sports is limited to the quieter non-motorised varieties. Scuba diving and snorkeling are particularly good options thanks to the added interest of a nearby wreck. Other activities to enjoy include a round or two of golf, or horse-riding trails tailored to take in the most scenic views. Staying in Runaway Bay, you're also near the little village of Nine Miles where music legend Bob Marley was born. As you can imagine the place certainly makes the most of its link with Jamaica's legendary musician, but with his music so engrained in the island's culture the experience is well worth it.
