Madeira is quite a large island off the coast of Portugal, known for its temperate climate and beauty. It is a popular destination year-round. What many travelers find when they visit is that there is a wealth of local cuisine that can tempt even the fussiest pallet. We hope that this list leaves your mouth watering with a hunger for travel.

Espetada Madeirense

A trip to Portugal would not be complete without some form of espetada, and Madeira is no exception. The espetada is so popular that chicken and fish versions are enjoyed as well. The espetada madeirense, however, is beef, which has been delicately seasoned and salted, then placed on a metal laurel. Traditionally, the dish would be cooked over open coals for a signature smoky flavour. However, many restaurants have tables with laurels attached to the centre of the table so that diners can enjoy the experience of watching the meat slowly cook.

Lapas

Limpets are flash fried in a metal skillet with butter and lemon, and served in the pan. This light but expertly made indulgence is understandably beloved by both locals and tourists. The recommended way to enjoy this meal is to add a side of bolo do caco (a wood fired bread roll) and a glass of Portuguese wine.

Prego no Bolo do Caco

Everyone knows and loves a good Prego. This traditional dish, however, elevates this simple steak sandwich in ways we don’t usually get to enjoy. The traditional wood fired bread roll (bolo do caco) is filled with spicy slow-cooked steak, topped with cheese, ham, lettuce, and tomato. The dish is served either as street food or as a popular lunchtime special at restaurants where the dish will likely come accompanied by fries.

Bife de Atum

Tuna is a fish loved the world over and, due to its particular abundance in the North Atlantic Ocean, it is a well loved dish in Madeira. Served mainly as a steak marinated in olive oil, garlic, salt, and oregano, this subtle yet flavourful dish is usually accompanied by fried maize or boiled potatoes and finished off with a crisp fresh salad.

Carne Vinha D'Alhos

Although traditionally seen as the Christmas season dish of Madeira, this pork based meal can be found and enjoyed the year round. The pork cubes are doused in white wine, vinegar, garlic, bay leaf, salt, and pepper, before being left for at least two days to marinate. The meat is then fried in lard with more of the marinade until browned and cooked to perfection. To round it out, indulge in a glass of wine while enjoying this decadent meal.
