Two things go wrong on this route, at opposite ends of it. Sofia arrivals after a late ski charter is one. The other is the word Bansko itself, which covers the old town, the new quarter at the gondola station and a great many beds in Razlog. Each row below takes one of those moments and says what a booking made in advance does with it.

A transfer that costs £145 for 160 km raises one question, and it is not about the money. It is whether the cheap option is the one that leaves you in Sofia arrivals at eleven at night with two board bags and nobody holding a sign.

The answer is in who takes the job. A run of this length each way is booked work for a vetted local operator based in this valley, not a fare picked up outside the terminal. • Door to door, to the property you named: the old town, the new quarter by the gondola station, or a hotel out in Razlog.
• Room for the gear. Declare the skis and boards at booking and the vehicle turns up with boot space for all of them.
• Free cancellation up to 24 hours before travel on vehicles seating 7 or fewer.
• Flight tracking with 60 minutes of free waiting after your scheduled landing, plus a 30 minute international buffer.

The pay-off comes the next morning. One gondola carries the whole resort up to the pistes, its queue is Bansko's oldest complaint, and sleeping at the right address is how you get in front of it.

About 2 hours 10 minutes from Sofia Airport for 160 km. Plenty of listings still say two and a half hours, or three; the booking search puts the drive at 129 minutes on clear roads, which is what the resort's own page has said all along.

There is only one airport in this conversation. Nothing scheduled lands nearer, and the road is the same road whichever carrier you fly: south out of the capital, then the Mesta valley under Pirin, with Razlog going past 7 km before Bansko. That last detail is worth a second look if your hotel voucher says Razlog rather than Bansko, because the fare is identical and the town is not.

From £145 one way for a private car carrying 3 people and their gear. The fare buys the vehicle rather than the seat, so three of you pay a third each and nothing on this route is sold by the head. A fourth seat in the same car is £161, and the booking search lists a 4-seat minibus at the same £161, which is a small van and not the 8-seater.

One quirk to know before you scroll: the 8-seat minibus is £209 and the 4-seat MPV is £214. The bigger vehicle is the cheaper one, which is the opposite of what the list looks like. Four people with four board bags should price the minibus first.

Razlog and Dobrinishte run on the same ladder, so a bed 7 km short of the gondola costs no less to reach. Prices are indicative.

The gear decides this more often than the headcount does, because 160 km is a long way to sit with a board bag across your knees. Beyond the priced options above, hoppa also runs:

• The lifts are not in the town. The pistes start about 10 km above it and the gondola ride is 25 minutes, so a bed by the lift station and a bed in the old town are two different holidays.
• Compare the minibus against the MPV. £209 for the 8-seater, £214 for the 4-seat MPV. The bigger vehicle is cheaper on this route.
• Declare the ski bags. One bag per person up to 24 inches is standard; over 24 inches counts as two pieces, and that can change the vehicle you need.
• Ask for the child seat at booking. The first one is free, and it has to be requested in advance.
• Cancellation runs off the vehicle size. 24 hours on 7 seats and under, 48 hours on 8 to 14, 14 days on 16 and above.
• Sort the way back while you are at it. Booking both legs together means no haggling over a fare on your last morning, and the return goes to the door you were dropped at.
• Booking inside 24 hours still works, though an expedited booking fee applies.

Four other ways cover the 160 km, and the difference between them is not really the fare. Nothing flies into Bansko, so every option below finishes on the same road up the Mesta valley and the only question is who is driving and where they stop.

Judge them on where you are standing when the bags come off. A coach seat is cheaper on the ticket until you add the ride from the terminal into Sofia at one end and the one from the bus stop to your hotel at the other.

Bansko has the longest season of any Bulgarian resort, December to May, and the best snow record with it. The town sits at 925 m on the river Glazane, in the north-eastern foot of Pirin, and the skiing is nowhere near it: two ski centres, Chalin Valog between 1,100 and 1,600 m and Shiligarnika between 1,700 and 2,500 m, about 10 km above the town on the northern slopes.

That split is the thing to plan around. A gondola from Bansko itself does the climb in 25 minutes, which means the whole resort goes up the mountain through one lift and everybody's ski week begins in the same queue.

• The drive is long and the town is low. 160 km from Sofia Airport, about 2 hours 10 minutes, and only 925 m at the end of it, so the road in is rarely what stops you.
• The tyres are the operator's problem, not yours. Bulgarian law puts winter rubber on every vehicle through these months, and hoppa fits it before the season opens rather than after the first fall.
• Landing after dark is the norm. Ski flights reach Sofia in the evening, and with a long drive still ahead most of it happens in the dark. The nighttime surcharge between 22:00 and 08:00 sits in the quote before you fly, not on a bill at the kerb.

Above the gondola the marked pistes total 70 km, with the main ski area between 2,000 and 2,600 m and Vihren at 2,914 m standing over it. Yulen holds the licence and has spent years rebuilding the lifts and the runs, and a new quarter of hotels and apartments has gone up opposite the gondola station. South of the town is Pirin National Park, on the UNESCO list, full of lakes, waterfalls and caves, and Bansko and Dobrinishte both have mineral springs.
