Landing at Sofia Airport (SOF)
Sofia is the gateway to Pamporovo for one reason and it is a good one: almost all of Bulgaria's flights land here. It is not the near airport — 226 km and about 3 hours 10 minutes by road, against Plovdiv's 78 km — and a private car lists at £209 against Plovdiv's £146. For most people the flight decides, and Sofia has the flight.
Meeting your hoppa driver
Your driver waits in the arrivals hall, holding a name board with your surname. Twenty-four hours before pickup hoppa sends a final SMS or WhatsApp with the exact spot and your driver's contact details.

Tip: save the emergency number from your e-ticket to your phone before you leave the terminal. Held up at the oversized baggage belt is the normal reason a ski arrival runs late, and one call tells the driver you are still inside.
Baggage & ski gear
Skis and boards are checked in as special baggage and come off a designated oversized belt rather than the standard carousel. Follow the signed oversized baggage area and allow extra time for it.
Tell hoppa how many ski, board and boot bags you are carrying when you book, so the vehicle sent has the space. The standard allowance is one bag per person up to 24 inches, and anything longer counts as two pieces.
Landing at Plovdiv instead
Pamporovo has two airports and they are not interchangeable — they are 148 km apart. Book the transfer for the one you are actually landing at:
- Sofia (SOF) — 226 km, about 3 hr 10 min, private car from £209, 8-seat minibus from £266. Where the flights are.
- Plovdiv (PDV) — 78 km, about 1 hr 30 min, private car from £146, MPV from £172, 8-seat minibus from £185, executive car from £309. Nearest, quickest and cheapest, and a small regional airport with far fewer flights.
If your dates offer a flight into Plovdiv, take it: you gain more than two hours of your first day and pay less for the transfer.
The road down, and the last 78 km
From Sofia the route runs east on the A1 Trakia motorway to Plovdiv — 148 km of the 226, and the quick, dull part of the day. At the edge of the Plovdiv plain it turns south through Asenovgrad and follows the Chepelarska gorge up into the Rhodope Mountains, past Bachkovo and Chepelare, to Pamporovo.
The forest half
Those last 78 km are the only mountain driving on the route, and they are the same 78 km whether you flew into Sofia or Plovdiv. The road climbs steadily through pine forest alongside the river rather than switchbacking up a cliff, so it is a long road rather than a frightening one — but it holds snow and ice through the season and it is dark early in midwinter.
Worth knowing: this is why the operator matters more than the vehicle here. A driver who runs the gorge every winter knows where it ices, where the lorries slow, and which end of the resort's forest road your hotel sits on. Vetted local fleets on this route carry winter tyres and chains as standard.
Where your driver drops you
At your hotel entrance. Pamporovo has no single centre — the hotels sit along one road through the pines, several have similar names, and there is no square to be dropped in and work it out from. Two things make the last two minutes of a three-hour day painless:
- Give the hotel or apartment name at booking, not just "Pamporovo"
- Save your e-ticket offline. Mobile signal in the gorge is patchy, and the meeting point and emergency number are what you want on the screen rather than in the cloud
If you are staying at Chepelare instead
Chepelare sits on the approach road a short way north, with its own runs and lift, and the transfer passes straight through it. Book to the town you are actually sleeping in — the drop-off differs even though most of the drive does not.
Your first day in the Rhodopes
Pamporovo skis differently from an Alpine resort, and the difference is the trees. The runs are cut through spruce and pine rather than run across open bowls, they are broad and well groomed, and the angles are gentle. It is the resort a first-timer or a family should want and an expert should not oversell to themselves.
Getting onto the mountain
- Snezhanka — the peak above the resort, carrying the landmark television tower and a viewing platform. Worth the trip up on a clear day even without skis
- The forest runs — tree-lined, broad and groomed, which is why they hold their shape when the wind gets up
- Chepelare — the neighbouring village on the approach road, with its own runs and lift if you want a change of scene
- Smolyan — the nearest town, just down the valley, for supermarkets, pharmacies and an evening that is not a hotel bar
Timing your arrival
A morning flight into Sofia has you at your hotel by mid-afternoon — enough to collect a pass and look at the map, not enough for a first run. A morning flight into Plovdiv has you there by lunchtime with an afternoon in hand. An evening flight into Sofia means arriving after dark at the end of a three-hour drive, which is entirely fine when someone is expecting you and the hotel name is on the booking. Transfers run through the night; a nighttime surcharge applies between 22:00 and 08:00 local time and is already in the price you agreed.
Tip: buy your lift pass through the hotel where you can. Saturday morning at the pass office is the one queue your transfer cannot save you from, and it comes straight after the one part of the trip you cannot shorten.
Getting around once you are there
You will not need a car. The resort is walkable along its own road, the lifts do the rest, and local buses and taxis cover Chepelare and Smolyan. That is worth weighing against hiring at the airport — a hire car spends the week outside the hotel after driving 226 km to get there.

Money and paperwork
Bulgaria's currency is the lev, and cards are widely accepted in the resort's hotels but less so in the smaller places down the valley — carry some cash for Chepelare and Smolyan. Your transfer is paid once, upfront, in the currency you booked it in, so there is nothing to settle with the driver at either end. Bring your GHIC or EHIC card and travel insurance that covers winter sports; a Rhodope tree line is still a mountain.

If you hire a car instead, confirm what is fitted before you leave the airport — it is your responsibility, not the rental desk's default, and the road that matters is the last 78 km rather than the motorway.
