Kuusamo, Rovaniemi & Oulu to Ruka Ski Transfers Private Cars, MPVs & Minibuses to Ruka, Kuusamo & the Eastern Lapland Resorts

Fixed-price door-to-door ski transfers to Ruka

Kuusamo Airport is 29 km from Ruka, and a private car on that short hop lists at £946. Oulu is 254 km away and the same car is £760. Rovaniemi sits between them at 197 km and £793.

Read those three lines again, because nearest is not cheapest here. Kuusamo is a very small Arctic airport with few local operators, so the short hop has no competitive floor under it while the long drives do. Price the flight and the transfer together, or the ground will cost you more than the air.

Private car from £760 from Oulu, £793 from Rovaniemi and £946 from Kuusamo Airport · 8-seat minibus from £1,158 · Free cancellation up to 24 hours before travel · Prices are indicative. Check hoppa.com for live prices.

What Ruka travellers ask before they book

Three airports, three very different drives, and one price that surprises people.

The basics

Which airport is closest to Ruka?

Kuusamo Airport (KAO), 29 km away and about 26 minutes by road. It takes direct flights from Helsinki through the winter, and it is the airport most people use for Ruka. It is also the dearest transfer of the three, for the reason in the next answer.

How much is a transfer to Ruka?

It depends which airport you fly into. A private car is £760 from Oulu, £793 from Rovaniemi and £946 from Kuusamo Airport. Those are indicative, one way.

How long is the transfer from Rovaniemi to Ruka?

About 2 hours 20 minutes for 197 km, door to door. After fresh snow allow up to two and a half hours. The longer figure you will see quoted elsewhere is the same road in worse weather, and it is the one to plan a connection on.

Why is the nearest airport the dearest transfer to Ruka?

Because Kuusamo is a very small Arctic airport. Few local operators work it, so nothing presses down on the price of the 29 km hop, while the long drives from Rovaniemi and Oulu are served out of much bigger towns and priced against each other. Compare the flight and the transfer together rather than one at a time.

Is there a bus to Ruka?

Not a direct one from any of the airports. From Rovaniemi you can ride to Kemijärvi and change onto a second bus for Ruka, which takes about three and a half hours plus the wait. It is ticketed per head and run by local operators rather than by hoppa.

Is there a shared shuttle from Kuusamo Airport to Ruka?

There is no shared shuttle on this route. Every hoppa transfer to Ruka is a private vehicle, priced per vehicle rather than per person, so the fare splits between your group. That matters more here than on most routes, because the fares are high.

Which vehicle fits my group?

How many people and how much luggage fit in each vehicle?

Vehicle categories include Sedan, Business Sedan, Minivan, Business Minivan, Minibus and Bus. Each has a strict insured maximum for passengers and luggage that drivers must adhere to. Default luggage allowance is one 24-inch suitcase per passenger — bags larger than 24″ count as two pieces. Choose a category that fits both your party and your bags.

Will I get the exact car shown in the picture?

Vehicle images are for illustration only. You're booking a category, not a specific model — and we may upgrade you to a higher category at no extra charge if your selected one isn't available.

Can I add a child seat for my baby or toddler?

Yes. We offer infant carriers, baby seats and boosters depending on your supplier and route. Add the seat type you need during booking so it can be confirmed in advance.

How much does a child seat cost?

The first child seat in your booking is included free. Any additional seats may carry a fee from the supplier — the exact amount is shown in your booking quote before you pay, so there are no surprises.

I forgot to request a child seat — can I add it after booking?

Yes. Contact customer service as soon as possible to add it to your booking. Late requests are honoured subject to availability, so the sooner you ask, the better. Important: no refund or replacement applies if a driver arrives without a seat that wasn't requested in time.

Is my child seat guaranteed once I've added it to my booking?

If you've added the seat at the time of booking, it's confirmed with your transport supplier. Seats requested after the booking is placed are subject to availability. If a seat ends up unavailable on arrival because it wasn't requested in time, no refund applies.

Can I bring a pet or service animal?

Yes, at no extra charge. Notify us at booking so the right vehicle is allocated. Important: animals count toward the vehicle's passenger capacity — so a 5-seat vehicle with two pets has three human seats.

Do you have wheelchair-accessible options?

Yes. Note any accessibility need (wheelchair, mobility scooter, special assistance) in the booking comments. We work with specialised partners and make reasonable efforts to accommodate.

What if my flight is delayed?

Will my driver wait if my flight is late?

Yes. Your driver waits up to 60 minutes free after your scheduled arrival for airport pickups. For international flights, there's also a 30-minute buffer added on top — so your driver's free waiting period starts after that buffer ends.

What if my flight is delayed by more than 2 hours?

Contact customer service to reschedule. If we can't pick you up at the new time, the order is cancelled without charge.

What if my flight is cancelled entirely?

Your transfer is cancelled free of charge. Contact customer service immediately so we can update the booking.

What if my flight is diverted to a different airport?

Contact us immediately. We'll do our best to reschedule your pickup — though we can't guarantee a free transfer if the new airport is in a different region or significantly further from your destination.

Where will I meet my driver?

24 hours before pickup we send a final SMS or WhatsApp with the exact meeting point and your driver's contact details. Meet & greet at the arrival gate is available on request, subject to airport policy — if not possible at the gate, we'll assign an alternative meeting point.

What if I'm stuck inside the airport (luggage, immigration)?

Use the emergency number on your e-ticket to call the driver or local supplier and let them know you're still in the terminal. The driver will wait through their free period and, if reached in time, can sometimes extend.

What counts as a no-show?

Not appearing within the free waiting period and being unreachable for additional time. No-shows are charged in full and non-refundable.

Best price & current deals

Where can I find a discount code?

Active offers are applied automatically when you search — there's nothing to enter manually. To see what's currently running, check our discount codes page or our homepage banner.

Should I book early?

Yes. We recommend booking at least 24 hours in advance for the best vehicle selection. Bookings within 24 hours are subject to availability and may carry an expedited service fee. Booking early also locks in today's price.

Is there a low-deposit option?

On selected services and destinations, yes — pay a deposit now and the balance before your travel date. If the balance isn't paid in time the booking auto-cancels and the deposit is forfeited. Note: low-deposit bookings can't be paid with hoppa Credits.

What is Refund Protect?

An optional add-on at checkout from our partner Refund Protect. If you (or anyone in your party) can't attend for a covered reason, you receive 100% of your booking back. Refund Protect's decision is final — see their full terms when adding the option.

Can I use hoppa Credits from a previous booking?

Yes. hoppa Credits apply automatically to your next booking when you log in with the same email. They expire 12 months after issue, can't be transferred between accounts, and can't be combined with low-deposit bookings.

Can I cancel and get a refund?

Yes, depending on timing and vehicle size. Up to 7 seats: free cancellation more than 24 hours before pickup; 100% charge within 24 hours. 8–14 seats: free outside 48 hours. 16+ seats: free outside 14 days, 50% within 14–7 days, 100% within 7 days. Approved refunds process within 14 days to your original payment method.

Are the drivers vetted and licensed?

We only work with established local transport partners who meet our service and safety standards, and who operate under their own local licensing and insurance requirements. Each supplier is contracted directly by hoppa.

I left something in the car

Contact customer service as soon as possible. We'll make reasonable efforts to recover and return your item, but we can't guarantee retrieval and don't accept liability for items left behind.

Smoking, damage and cleaning fees

What are hoppa Credits?

Credit issued on refunds or as a goodwill gesture. They apply automatically to your next booking when you log in with the same email, expire 12 months after issue, can't be transferred, and can't be combined with low-deposit bookings.

How do I cancel my booking? Can I get a refund?

Cancel from your account or by contacting support. Refund depends on timing and vehicle size: up to 7 seats — free outside 24 hours, 100% charge within 24 hours. 8–14 seats — free outside 48 hours. 16+ seats — free outside 14 days, 50% within 14–7 days, 100% within 7 days.

Can I change my booking details?

Yes, but only for: passenger names, contact numbers, number of passengers, and luggage count (within the booked vehicle's capacity). One free modification is allowed if your booking is eligible. For other changes — including route, vehicle category or pickup point — you'll need to cancel and rebook at the current price.

How long do refunds take to process?

Approved refunds are processed within 14 days to your original payment method.

Common problems travelling to Ruka, and how hoppa solves them

Ruka is 29 km from one small airport and better than three hours from another, and the cheapest transfer is the longest drive. That single fact causes most of the trouble on this route. Here is what catches travellers out, and what hoppa does about each one.

Challenge Solution How do we solve it?
You land in the polar dark at a very small Arctic airport Be met inside, and be in a warm vehicle within minutes. Your driver waits inside the arrivals hall at Kuusamo holding a board with your surname, and Ruka is 29 km up the road — about 26 minutes. You are outside for the walk to the vehicle and no longer. That is worth more here than it is anywhere in the Alps.
You booked the nearest airport assuming it would be the cheapest Price all three gateways before you book the flight. A private car is £946 from Kuusamo at 29 km, £793 from Rovaniemi at 197 km and £760 from Oulu at 254 km. Kuusamo is a small airport with few operators, so the short hop carries no competitive floor. If the flights work, Oulu or Rovaniemi can leave you better off overall even after three hours of road.
There are four of you with ski bags and the saloon boot will not take them Declare the gear at booking, not at the kerb. Tell hoppa what you are carrying and the vehicle sent has the space — a private MPV from £846 from Oulu, £912 from Rovaniemi or £1,228 from Kuusamo. The standard allowance is one bag per person up to 24 inches; anything longer counts as two pieces, which is most ski bags.
Your Helsinki connection slips and the last flight north is tight Book a transfer with flight tracking. hoppa watches your inbound flight and moves the pickup to match. Airport arrivals carry 60 minutes of free waiting after your scheduled landing, plus 30 minutes more on international flights, so a delay costs you nothing. It matters here: the northern schedules are thin and a missed connection can mean the next day.
The fare per head looks brutal for a couple Split the vehicle, or split the gateway. Every price on this page is for the whole vehicle, so an 8-seat minibus at £1,158 from Oulu is a very different number divided eight ways than it is divided two. Two couples travelling together on one booking is the single biggest saving available on this route.
You are carrying on to Levi or Salla and nobody has priced it Book the onward leg like an airport transfer. Levi is 330 km from Ruka — about four and a half to five hours — and Salla is 88 km, roughly an hour and a half. Both are bookable door-to-door transfers, and neither is priced on this page, so check the booking search for a live fare before you commit to the itinerary.
Ice, darkness and reindeer on the road, after a day of flying Use a local operator who drives it every winter. The roads here are flat and straight — there is no pass and no hairpin in Lapland. What makes it a winter drive is a packed-snow surface, very little daylight and animals on the verge. Vetted local fleets run studded winter tyres and drive these roads daily.

Why do Ruka travellers choose a private transfer with hoppa?

Transfers to Ruka are expensive and this page will not pretend otherwise. A private car is £946 from Kuusamo and £760 from Oulu. What the money buys is the part of the journey you cannot arrange from your sofa: a vehicle that actually exists, at a small Arctic airport, in the dark, with room for four ski bags.

Whoever drives you is a vetted local operator with eastern Lapland in their working week all winter, on studded tyres. The vehicle, the fare and the meeting point are all fixed at booking. The driver's name, their mobile number and the registration of the car arrive 24 hours before pickup.

This is what sits inside the fare:

  • The price is closed. Tolls, taxes and the driver's fee are inside it, and snow does not reopen it.
  • Someone in the arrivals hall holding your surname. Not a text telling you to walk outside and look for a car.
  • Door to door, to the hotel, apartment or cabin you named in Ruka or Kuusamo, not to a stop in the village.
  • Room for the kit. List the skis, the boards, the boot bags and the pushchair when you book, and the vehicle that turns up has been chosen to hold them.
  • Free cancellation up to 24 hours before travel on vehicles seating 7 or fewer.
  • Flight tracking with 60 minutes of free waiting after your scheduled landing, plus a 30 minute international buffer.

That leaves a private vehicle, a hire car, or the two-bus route through Kemijärvi. Divided between four or eight of you, the fixed fare stops looking like the expensive answer.

With a standard ride app When you book with hoppa
The driver Whoever is available at a small Arctic airport when a full flight lands. A vetted local operator who drives the eastern Lapland roads all winter, with name, number and vehicle sent 24 hours ahead.
The price A headline fare, then a luggage supplement and a night rate explained to you at the kerb. £946 from Kuusamo, £793 from Rovaniemi, £760 from Oulu — fixed at booking, for the whole vehicle. Tolls, taxes, the driver's fee and any night surcharge are already in it.
Choosing the airport Book the nearest one and find out what the ground costs afterwards. All three gateways priced on one page, so the flight and the transfer are one decision instead of two.
Where you are met A message telling you to find a vehicle outside, in the cold, with the children and the ski bags. A driver inside the arrivals hall with a name board, and a phone number that reaches a person in about 11 seconds.
The vehicle A saloon with a boot that takes two suitcases, and the ski bags left on the snow. Sized from what you declared: car, MPV or minibus, on studded winter tyres as standard.
A delayed flight The ride is gone, and the next flight north is tomorrow. The pickup moves with your inbound flight. 60 minutes of free waiting, plus 30 more on an international arrival.
Where you are dropped A stop in the village, then your bags along an icy road to find the cabin. The door of the property you named — in Ruka, in Kuusamo or out on a forest road.
When plans change A non-refundable booking, or a phone queue in another time zone. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before travel on 7 seats and under. Support answers in an average of 11 seconds, 24/7.

How long is the transfer from Kuusamo, Rovaniemi or Oulu to Ruka?

About 26 minutes from Kuusamo Airport for 29 km, about 2 hours 20 minutes from Rovaniemi for 197 km, and about 3 hours from Oulu for 254 km. Kuusamo is the short one by a factor of five and the dear one by a wide margin: £946 against £760 from Oulu.

On the long drives the clock is the slippery part, so know which figure you are reading. Two hours twenty is the Rovaniemi road clear and dry. Two and a half hours is what fresh snow costs across 197 km of forest, and Oulu runs to three and a half hours in hard conditions. Plan any connection on the longer number.

Route Drive time Approx. cost per vehicle Vehicle type
Kuusamo Airport (KAO) to Ruka ~26 min · 29 km £946–£1,606private car to 8-seat minibus Private car — the nearest airport, and the dearest transfer
Rovaniemi Airport (RVN) to Ruka ~2 hr 20 min · 197 km £793–£1,252private car to 8-seat minibus Private car — the widest choice of vehicles, up to 14 seats
Oulu Airport (OUL) to Ruka ~3 hr · 254 km £760–£1,158private car to 8-seat minibus Private car — the longest drive and the lowest fare

Please note: Kuusamo is 29 km away and costs more than either long drive, because it is a small Arctic airport with few local operators and the short hop has no competitive floor. That is worth knowing before you book the flight rather than after. Drive times assume clear roads: allow up to two and a half hours from Rovaniemi and three and a half from Oulu in hard winter conditions. Each price runs from a private car to an 8-seat minibus on that exact route, so the top of the range is a bigger vehicle rather than a surcharge. Salla, Pyhä-Luosto, Kajaani and Levi are all quoted on the booking search. Prices are indicative.

How much is a transfer to Ruka?

The cheapest private car to Ruka is £760 and it comes from the airport furthest away. That fare carries up to 3 people and their bags over 254 km and about three hours from Oulu, which is the longest drive on this page and the lowest number on it.

The fare does not follow the distance here, and that is the thing to understand before you book. Kuusamo Airport is 29 km from Ruka and lists at £946. Oulu is nearly nine times the road and £760. Kuusamo is a very small airport with a short roster of local operators, so nothing presses down on the price of the short hop; the long drives are served out of bigger towns and priced against each other. Compare the flight and the transfer as one number:

  • From Kuusamo Airport (29 km): private car £946, MPV £1,228 for 4, £1,417 for 5, executive car £1,417, 8-seat minibus £1,606. Five vehicle types, and the ladder stops at 8 seats.
  • From Rovaniemi (197 km): private car £793, MPV £912 for 4, £1,054 for 5, executive car £1,149, 7-seat minibus £1,189, 8-seat £1,252, executive MPV £1,427, then £2,140 for 10, £2,417 for 12 and £2,536 for 14. Ten vehicle types, the widest choice of the three.
  • From Oulu (254 km): private car £760, MPV £846 for 4, £863 for 5, executive car £1,014, 8-seat minibus £1,158, then £2,218 for 10 and £2,479 for 12.

Two rungs repay a second look. From Oulu the 5-seat MPV is £863 against £846 for the 4-seat, which is the cheapest extra seat anywhere on this page. And from every gateway the real cliff sits above 8 seats: £1,158 becomes £2,218 for 10 from Oulu, so nine or ten of you should price two smaller vehicles against one large minibus before booking.

Prices are indicative. The vehicle types differ by gateway because the operators do. Rovaniemi offers ten and Kuusamo five, which is the same fact that makes the short hop expensive.

Not every group needs a private car. The right vehicle to Ruka is decided by what you are carrying as much as by your headcount — four people with four board bags and four snowsuits need an MPV, not a saloon. Prices above are the cheapest gateway for each vehicle, so check your own airport on the booking search. Beyond the priced options, hoppa also runs:

  • Wheelchair accessible minibus: 1 to 6 seats, for travellers and families with mobility needs. Request it at booking.
  • Private coach: up to 60 seats for a club trip, a school group or a corporate party. Vehicles seating 16 or more need 14 days' notice to cancel free of charge.

Neither is quoted above because these routes' fares stop at 14 seats — check the booking search for a live price on anything larger. Child seats are free: the first one at no charge, requested at booking. Pets and service animals are permitted and count toward the vehicle's passenger allowance.

Vehicle type Max passengers Luggage capacity Why choose this option? Estimated price (one-way)
Private car Up to 3 Up to 3 bags Direct door-to-door from arrivals — the simplest way for couples and small groups to get off a late flight and into the warm. Cheapest from Oulu, dearest from Kuusamo. From £760
Private MPV Up to 4 Up to 4 bags Families who need boot space as well as seats. Skis, boot bags and a pushchair take more room than people expect. From £846
Private MPV (5 passengers) Up to 5 Up to 5 bags Five travellers and their luggage in one vehicle. From Oulu it is barely more than the 4-seat — the cheapest extra seat on this route. From £863
Executive car Up to 3 Up to 3 bags A better car at each end of a long winter drive, or a business arrival into Kuusamo. From £1,014
Private minibus (7 passengers) Up to 7 Up to 7 bags Priced from Rovaniemi only, and cheaper there than the 8-seat. Worth checking if there are exactly seven of you. From £1,189
Private minibus Up to 8 Up to 8 bags The cheapest way per head to reach Ruka, on one fixed price split between you. Vehicles seating 8 to 14 need 48 hours' notice to cancel free of charge. From £1,158
Executive MPV Up to 4 Up to 4 bags Executive comfort with room for the luggage. Priced from Rovaniemi on this route. From £1,427
Large minibus (10–14) Up to 14 Up to 14 bags A full group arriving together, from Rovaniemi or Oulu. This is the step where the price moves hard, so compare it against two smaller vehicles first. Vehicles seating 8 to 14 need 48 hours' notice to cancel free of charge. From £2,218

A few things worth knowing before you book:

  • The nearest airport is the dearest transfer. £946 for a private car over 29 km from Kuusamo, against £760 over 254 km from Oulu. Kuusamo is a small airport with few operators, so price the flight and the transfer as one number.
  • Rovaniemi gives you the most vehicle choice. Ten types from £793, up to 14 seats, which makes it the only gateway here able to carry a group of twelve. Rovaniemi is also a holiday in its own right if you want a night on the Arctic Circle first.
  • Put the property name in, not just the resort. Cabins are strung along the roads around the fell, and the drop is at whichever door you name rather than at the village centre.
  • Splitting the vehicle is the real saving. Every fare here is per vehicle, so an 8-seat minibus at £1,158 divided eight ways beats two private cars comfortably.
  • Declare the ski bags. One bag per person up to 24 inches is standard; over 24 inches counts as two pieces, and that changes the vehicle you need.
  • Ask for the child seat at booking. The first one is free, but it has to be requested in advance.
  • Cancellation runs off the vehicle size. 24 hours on 7 seats and under, 48 hours on 8 to 14, 14 days on 16 and above.
  • Book the return while you are in the booking flow. Getting back to Oulu is three hours of road in the other direction, and it is far easier to fix that pickup time now than from a cabin on a Friday night.
  • Booking inside 24 hours still works, though an expedited booking fee applies.

How else can you get to Ruka?

Six ways in, and on a route this remote they are nowhere near each other. 29 km from Kuusamo is a short taxi ride. 197 km from Rovaniemi is a two-bus day with a change at Kemijärvi. What you are choosing between is a fixed price to the door and a cheaper journey that eats most of your first day.

The bus route via Kemijärvi is genuinely cheap and genuinely long. Arriving on the fell in the dark with skis and a tired child, after two buses and a wait at a station you had never heard of, is a different holiday from the one you booked.

Transport option Indicative price to Ruka Journey time What's included / what to watch for
hoppa private car (Kuusamo Airport to Ruka) From £946 per vehicle ~26 min Fixed all-in price. A named driver waits inside Kuusamo arrivals with a name board, then door-to-door to your hotel, apartment or cabin. It is the fastest way to Ruka by a factor of five and the dearest per kilometre on this page — a small airport with few operators. Studded winter tyres as standard.
hoppa private car (Oulu Airport to Ruka) From £760 per vehicle ~3 hr The cheapest private car to Ruka. 254 km, about three hours, and £760 for the whole vehicle — less than the 29 km hop from Kuusamo. Oulu also has far more flights than Kuusamo, so it is worth pricing the pair together before you book either.
hoppa private minibus (Oulu Airport to Ruka) From £1,158 per vehicle ~3 hr The cheapest way per head, for a group. Eight seats with room for the bags, on one fixed all-in price split between you. Rovaniemi carries up to 14 from £2,536. There is no shared shuttle on this route, so a private vehicle is the hoppa option either way.
Bus from Rovaniemi via Kemijärvi Ticketed per person ~3 hr 30 min plus the change Cheap, and a real option if you are travelling light. Take a bus from Rovaniemi to Kemijärvi and a second bus onward to Ruka — around three and a half hours of road plus whatever the connection costs you. Run by local operators rather than by hoppa, ticketed per person, on a timetable, and luggage space is whatever is left.
Hire car from the airport Day rate + fuel and fees ~26 min – 3 hr hoppa car hire is available at the airports, and it is the right answer if you want to explore eastern Lapland at your own pace. Winter tyres are a legal requirement in Finland through the winter months, so confirm what is fitted. Then you drive a dark, snow-packed road after a day of flying, and you dig the car out each morning.
Turning up and hoping at Kuusamo No fixed price Varies Avoid, and more so here than almost anywhere. Kuusamo is a very small airport with a short roster of local operators — the same fact that makes the transfer expensive makes it scarce. Asking it to produce a vehicle with room for a family's ski gear, at no agreed price, when a full flight has just landed in the dark, is not a plan. Book before you fly.

What should you know about travelling to Ruka in winter?

Ruka is a compact ski village on the side of a fell in Kuusamo, in eastern Finnish Lapland, just south of the Arctic Circle. It has one of the longest seasons in Finland, floodlit evening pistes, and the Arctic winter around it: reindeer safaris, northern lights, snowmobiles and ice fishing. It is a family resort rather than a party one, and the skiing is short, well-groomed and reliably snow-covered rather than steep.

Getting here is the part that needs planning, because the fare does not follow the distance.

  • The nearest airport is the dearest transfer. Kuusamo is 29 km away at £946 for a private car; Oulu is 254 km away at £760. Few operators work a very small Arctic airport, so nothing presses down on the price of the short hop. Price the flight and the transfer as one number.
  • Rovaniemi is the flexible middle. 197 km, about 2 hours 20 minutes, from £793. Ten vehicle types run up to 14 seats there, more choice than the other two gateways offer between them.
  • The season here is long at both ends. Ruka opens either side of the Alpine calendar, so it is worth a look in November and again in spring when the Alps are thin.
  • The polar dark is not a problem to solve. Around the turn of the year the sun barely clears the horizon, and Ruka floodlights its evening pistes, so the short days cost you less skiing than you expect. On a clear night the aurora odds here are among the best in Europe.
  • Winter equipment is not optional. Winter tyres are a legal requirement in Finland through the winter months, and every vetted operator here runs studded tyres as standard.

Ruka is also a base for the rest of eastern Lapland. These onward transfers are all real and all bookable, and none of them carries a fare on this page, so check the booking search for a live price:

  • Salla is 88 km, roughly an hour and a half.
  • Pyhä-Luosto National Park is 175 km, about two and a half hours.
  • Kajaani train station is 270 km and about three and a half hours, and it is the nearest station to Ruka.
  • Levi is 330 km and four and a half to five hours, if you are skiing two Lapland resorts in one trip.

Coming from the capital? Fly the last leg. Helsinki to Kuusamo is a short hop in the air against 800-odd km of road, and Helsinki Airport connects to all three of the gateways above. If you are still choosing where to ski, Finland has more resorts than most people realise.

Your Ruka arrival guide, from the aircraft door to the fell

Kuusamo is one of the smallest airports you will ever collect a ski bag at: a single terminal, a single arrivals hall, and 29 km of road between the baggage belt and the fell. From Rovaniemi it is 197 km and about 2 hours 20 minutes; from Oulu, 254 km and about three hours.

What follows runs in order, for whichever of the three airports you are landing at.

Arrival guide to Ruka and Kuusamo

Everything you need from wheels down in eastern Lapland to your first morning on the fell.

Landing at Kuusamo Airport (KAO)

Kuusamo is the closest airport to Ruka — 29 km, about 26 minutes by road — and through the winter it takes direct flights from Helsinki alongside a handful of seasonal services. A private car is £946. It is a small single-terminal airport, which is both the best and the most expensive thing about it.

One small terminal

There is one arrivals hall, so baggage reclaim, the exit and your driver are all within about thirty seconds of each other. Your e-ticket names the meeting point, so read it before you land rather than in the baggage hall.

Meeting your hoppa driver

Your driver waits in the arrivals hall, holding a name board with your surname. Twenty-four hours before pickup hoppa sends a final message with the exact spot, the vehicle details and your driver's contact number — so you are never standing outside in the cold working out which vehicle is yours.

  • Airport arrivals carry 60 minutes of free waiting after your scheduled landing, plus a 30 minute buffer on international flights
  • Your driver tracks the inbound flight, so a delay through Helsinki moves the pickup rather than losing it
  • If you cannot see them, stay inside and call the number on your e-ticket — hoppa answers in an average of 11 seconds, and it is a person, not a chatbot
Tip: put hats, gloves and proper coats in your hand luggage, not the hold bag — and dress the children before you leave the terminal. The walk from the door to the vehicle is short, but it is a Lapland winter out there and the baggage belt is not where you want to be unpacking.

Why the short hop costs what it does

Kuusamo returns five vehicle types on the booking search, against ten from Rovaniemi. A small Arctic airport has a short roster of local fleets, so there is little pressing down on the price of a 29 km run — which is why £946 from here sits above £760 from Oulu, 254 km away. It is worth knowing before you book the flight rather than after, and it is the reason this page prices all three gateways side by side.

The two long drives, and why they are cheaper

Rovaniemi Airport is 197 km from Ruka — about 2 hours 20 minutes — and a private car is £793. Oulu Airport is 254 km and about three hours, from £760. Both are bigger airports with more flights and more operators than Kuusamo, and both undercut it.

Which one to choose

  • Oulu — the cheapest private car to Ruka at £760, and the most flights. Three hours of road is the price of it. Vehicles up to 12 seats, from £2,479
  • Rovaniemi — £793 and about 2 hours 20 minutes, with ten vehicle types up to 14 seats. The only gateway here that can carry a group of twelve or fourteen in one vehicle
  • Kuusamo — 26 minutes and £946. Right if your time matters more than the fare, or if the Helsinki connection only works to KAO
Worth knowing: the drive times above are for clear roads. Allow up to two and a half hours from Rovaniemi and three and a half from Oulu after fresh snow. Plan any onward connection on the longer figure — the roads are flat and straight, but nobody in Lapland hurries on packed snow.

Rovaniemi is also a stop worth making

Rovaniemi is the capital of Finnish Lapland and the official hometown of Santa Claus, with the Arctic Circle running through Santa Claus Village a few kilometres from its airport. A night there before you drive east is a common way to build this trip, and the airport transfer into the city is a fraction of the run out to Ruka.

Coming from Helsinki

Fly the last leg. Helsinki to Kuusamo is a short hop in the air against 800-odd km of road, and Helsinki Airport connects to all three gateways. There are trains north to Kajaani and Oulu if you would rather travel on the ground, but book your transfer from the airport or station you actually arrive at — it cannot be redirected on the day.

Your first days in Ruka

Ruka is a village at the foot of a fell, and everything is close together: the lifts, the ski school, the shops and most of the accommodation are within walking distance of each other. That is the shape of the place — you park once and then walk, which is exactly why a door-to-door transfer earns its money at the start and end of the week.

What people actually come for

  • A long, reliable season — Ruka opens either side of the Alpine one, and the snow here does not depend on altitude
  • Floodlit evening skiing — which is the honest answer to the polar dark rather than a workaround for it
  • Reindeer and husky safaris — the two things every family books, and the two that sell out first at Christmas
  • Northern lights — best away from the village lights, so book a hunt rather than hoping from your window
  • Cross-country trails — hundreds of kilometres of them through the forest around Kuusamo

Where you are dropped

Ruka spreads further than it looks, so the address matters:

  • Ruka village — ski-in apartments and hotels at the foot of the fell
  • Kuusamo town — 29 km down the road, cheaper beds and a longer drive to the lift
  • Forest cabins — spread along the roads around the fell, where a transfer is the difference between a holiday and a hike
Tip: book the aurora and safari trips for a night or two into your stay rather than the evening you land. Cloud decides them and you want a spare night in hand. Then dress for standing still, not for moving — the cold that catches people out here is on a snowmobile or waiting for the lights.

Timing your arrival

A morning flight into Kuusamo has you in Ruka before lunch, which is a real advantage of the expensive gateway. Evening arrivals are normal here and transfers run through the night: a nighttime surcharge applies between 22:00 and 08:00 local time and is already in the price you agreed.

Practical essentials

Your transfer, in numbers

  • Free waiting on airport arrivals: 60 minutes after your scheduled landing, plus a 30 minute buffer on international flights
  • Free waiting on departures and point-to-point: 15 minutes after the scheduled pickup time
  • Cancellation: 24 hours before travel on 7 seats and under, 48 hours on 8 to 14 seats, 14 days on 16 seats and above — all for a full refund
  • Child seats: the first one is free. Request it at booking
  • Luggage: one bag per person up to 24 inches. Over 24 inches counts as two pieces, which is most ski bags
  • Nighttime surcharge: 22:00 to 08:00 local time, already included in the price you agree
  • Booking inside 24 hours: possible, with an expedited booking fee
  • Pets and service animals: permitted, counting toward the vehicle's passenger allowance

Paying, and what you owe the driver

Nothing. Your transfer is paid once, upfront, in the currency you booked it in, so there is no cash to find and no card machine at the kerb. At checkout hoppa accepts Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Maestro and PayPal.

Winter driving rules

Winter tyres are a legal requirement in Finland through the winter months, and every vetted operator here runs studded tyres as standard. If you hire a car instead, confirm what is fitted before you leave the airport — and be realistic about driving 254 km of dark, snow-packed road at the end of a travel day.

If something goes wrong

hoppa's support team answers in an average of 11 seconds, 24/7, across chat, email and phone, with a 99.7% call answer rate. Any complaint must reach customer service within 30 days of the date of service.

Before you leave home: screenshot your e-ticket. The meeting point, your driver's number and the emergency line are the three things you want on the screen rather than in the cloud — and Arctic cold flattens a phone battery faster than you expect.

What to expect on the road to Ruka

Twenty-six minutes from Kuusamo, two hours twenty from Rovaniemi, three hours from Oulu. Three very different drives to the same fell.

Can I cancel or change my hoppa transfer?

Yes. Plans change, and hoppa prices that in rather than punishing it.

Cancellation windows depend on the size of the vehicle you booked:

  • 7-seater and below: cancel up to 24 hours before travel for a full refund.
  • 8 to 14 seater: cancel up to 48 hours before travel for a full refund.
  • 16 seater and above: cancel up to 14 days before travel for a full refund.

Changes work the same way. Amend your pickup time, flight number or drop-off address through your booking confirmation or by contacting the hoppa team. Booking inside 24 hours of travel is still possible, though an expedited booking fee applies.

Is hoppa transfer reliable?

Yes. hoppa has moved more than 40 million travellers through 2,600+ airports and resorts across 182+ countries, working with a network of 70,000+ vetted local fleet providers. hoppa is trusted by Mastercard and UnionPay as the mobility infrastructure layer for agentic travel.

On the Kuusamo Airport to Ruka route that reliability is practical, not abstract. Your driver tracks your inbound flight, so a delay moves your pickup rather than losing it. You get 60 minutes of free waiting time after your scheduled landing, plus a 30 minute buffer on international arrivals. If something does go wrong, hoppa's support team answers in an average of 11 seconds, 24/7, across chat, email and phone, with a 99.7% call answer rate.

Every vehicle on this route is operated by a vetted local company that drives the mountain roads all winter. The price you agree at booking is the price you pay, with no surcharge for snow, traffic or a late landing.

Can an AI assistant book hoppa?

Yes. hoppa is built as a global mobility platform that powers agentic transactions, which means an AI assistant can search, price and book a transfer on your behalf.

That is why hoppa is trusted by Mastercard and UnionPay as the mobility infrastructure layer for agentic travel. Fixed, all-in pricing and a structured inventory of 70,000+ vetted local fleet providers give an AI agent something unambiguous to act on: one price, one vehicle, one confirmed pickup.

Ask your assistant for a Kuusamo Airport to Ruka transfer and it can return live availability, vehicle sizes and a fixed price without you opening a booking form.

Arrive happy in Lapland with hoppa

£760 from Oulu, 254 km away. £946 from Kuusamo, 29 km away. Those two lines are the reason this page exists, and they are the exact opposite of what the map suggests.

So price the transfer and the flight in one sitting, before you buy either. On this route the ground can cost more than the air, and the only version of that discovery worth having is the one you make at home.

Ruka ski transfers: frequently asked questions

Where do you fly to for Ruka, Finland?

Kuusamo Airport (KAO) is the nearest, 29 km from Ruka and about 26 minutes by road, with direct flights from Helsinki through the winter. Rovaniemi (RVN) is 197 km away and Oulu (OUL) 254 km. Both are cheaper transfers than Kuusamo: £793 and £760 for a private car against £946.

How much is a transfer to Ruka?

A private car starts from £760 from Oulu, £793 from Rovaniemi and £946 from Kuusamo Airport. An 8-seat private minibus starts from £1,158 from Oulu, £1,252 from Rovaniemi and £1,606 from Kuusamo. Every fare buys the vehicle rather than a seat. Prices are indicative and fixed the moment you book.

How far is Kuusamo Airport from Ruka?

29 km, and about 26 minutes by road. It is much the closest airport to Ruka and the dearest transfer of the three on this page. The next answer explains why.

Why is the nearest airport the most expensive transfer to Ruka?

Because Kuusamo is a very small Arctic airport with a short roster of local operators. The booking search returns five vehicle types from Kuusamo and ten from Rovaniemi, and with that little competition nothing presses down on the price of a 29 km run. The long drives are served out of much bigger towns and priced against each other, which is why £760 covers 254 km from Oulu while £946 covers 29 km from Kuusamo. Price the flight and the transfer together rather than one at a time.

How do I get to Ruka from Rovaniemi?

By road it is 197 km and about 2 hours 20 minutes, from £793 for a private car and £1,252 for an 8-seat minibus. After fresh snow allow up to two and a half hours. There is also a bus route: Rovaniemi to Kemijärvi, then a second bus on to Ruka, around three and a half hours plus the change. It is ticketed per head and run by local operators rather than by hoppa.

How do I get to Ruka from Oulu?

254 km and about three hours by road, from £760 for a private car. That is the cheapest fare to Ruka on this page, from the gateway with the most flights. Allow up to three and a half hours in hard winter conditions. Vehicles run up to 12 seats from Oulu, at £2,479.

Which airport should I fly into for Ruka?

Kuusamo if your time matters most: 26 minutes against three hours, at £946. Oulu if your budget does, at £760 and far more flights. Rovaniemi if you need a big vehicle, because it is the only one of the three carrying up to 14 seats, or if you want a night on the Arctic Circle on the way. Compare the flight and the transfer as one number and the answer usually decides itself.

Can I get to Ruka by train?

Not the whole way. Ruka and Kuusamo have no railway station, and the nearest one is Kajaani, which sits further from the resort than two of the three airports on this page. Trains from Helsinki do reach Kajaani and Oulu, and hoppa will drive the last leg from either station to your door, booked exactly like an airport transfer and quoted on the booking search.

Where in Lapland is Ruka?

In Kuusamo, in eastern Finnish Lapland, just south of the Arctic Circle. The village sits at the foot of a fell about 29 km north of Kuusamo town, with the airport between the two.

What is the closest major airport to Lapland?

Rovaniemi Airport (RVN) is the main gateway to Finnish Lapland, taking domestic and international flights, and it sits 197 km from Ruka, about 2 hours 20 minutes, from £793. Kuusamo Airport is much closer at 29 km. The Rovaniemi page covers transfers at that end.

Can hoppa take me from Ruka to Levi, Salla or Pyhä-Luosto?

Yes, all of them, booked exactly like an airport transfer. Salla is 88 km and roughly an hour and a half, Pyhä-Luosto 175 km and about two and a half hours, and Levi 330 km and about four and a half to five hours. None of them is priced on this page, so check the booking search for a live fare on each.

How do I get to Ruka from Helsinki?

Fly the last leg. Helsinki to Kuusamo is a short hop in the air against 800-odd km of road, and Helsinki Airport also connects to Rovaniemi and Oulu if the fares or the timings work better. Trains run north to Kajaani and Oulu if you would rather travel on the ground. Book your transfer from the airport or station you actually arrive at.

Is it dark when I arrive in Ruka?

Very probably. Around the turn of the year the sun barely clears the horizon at all. None of that changes your transfer: the driver waits indoors, the vehicle is warm before you reach it, and Ruka floodlights its evening pistes, so the short days cost you less skiing than you would expect.

Can hoppa drop me at a forest cabin near Ruka?

Yes. Cabins run along the roads around the fell, some of them a fair way out from the village. Enter the property name at booking and that is where the driver stops. The fare is the same either way.

What happens if my flight is delayed?

hoppa tracks the inbound flight and moves your pickup with it. Airport arrivals carry 60 minutes of free waiting after your scheduled landing, plus a 30 minute buffer on international flights, and support answers in an average of 11 seconds if you need it. That matters on the northern schedules, where a missed connection can mean the next day.

Is it worth pre-booking a transfer to Ruka?

Yes, and more so here than at a big airport. Kuusamo is small, and the same thin operator roster that makes the transfer expensive makes it scarce the moment a full flight lands. Pre-booking settles the price before you fly and guarantees a vehicle with room for the ski bags.

Do I need winter tyres to drive to Ruka?

If you are driving yourself, yes. Winter tyres are a legal requirement in Finland through the winter months, and the roads here are packed snow for much of the season. hoppa car hire is available at the airports, so confirm what is fitted before you drive away. Every hoppa operator on these routes runs studded tyres as standard.

When is the best time to ski Ruka?

Ruka has one of the longest seasons in Finland, opening either side of the Alpine one, so it is worth a look when the Alps are thin. Midwinter brings the deepest snow, the northern lights and the polar dark. The spring end of the season brings the daylight back. Floodlit pistes cover the short days either way.
