Eating out in Stockholm isn't cheap, but it is fresh, varied and delicious. The cuisine is definitely best experienced in winter to warm you up from the inside out! Here are five must-try foods in Stockholm.


Meatballs are the quintessential Swedish dish. These pork and beef meatballs have a wonderful flavour and are served with a rich gravy, mashed potatoes, lingonberries and pickled cucumbers. You can't visit Stockholm and not try authentic Swedish meatballs!


Lingonberries are served as an accompaniment with almost every meal in Sweden, from Lingonberry Jam to Lingonberry Juice! These sweet berries taste delicious with meatballs as well as served as warm juice on a snowy, cold day.


Glögg (also known as mulled wine) is made from hot red wine, sugar, cardamom, ginger, cloves and orange. Most places also sell non-alcoholic Glögg too, as well as stronger versions such as Glögg with rum! It's the perfect drink to warm you up whilst sightseeing in Stockholm. You can buy it as the Stockholm Christmas Markets in Gamla Stan as well as bars and restaurants.

Fika with a Cinnamon Roll

The coffee culture is so strong in Sweden that they have a word for it, fika! Fika means to have a coffee break with a sweet snack. Your coffee is best accompanied by one of Sweden's most iconic foods, the cinnamon bun (or kanelbulle). These spiced buns are found in every single cafe, restaurant, 7/11 and grocery store around the country and are so good that you'll struggle to stop at one!

Pickled Herring

Pickled herring is not for the faint of heart but it is a must try in Stockholm. You can buy fermented herring in a can or try it in a restaurant served on rye bread as a snack. It's delicious but potent on the nose.
