Then price the bigger vehicle before you confirm the one you were about to book. The 8-seat minibus out of Salzburg costs less than the 5-seat one. No railway reaches the Glemmtal. The line runs through the Salzach valley below. Your nearest useful station is Zell am See, about 20 km away on the main Salzburg to Wörgl route. You finish by road whatever else you do. The only real question is where the road part starts.

Train to Zell am See, then a transfer onward, takes two and a half to three hours out of Salzburg. That is with the connection allowed for. You lift every ski bag twice. Out of Munich you change at Wörgl as well and give up the best part of five hours.

Scheduled buses run up the valley from the Zell am See side. They cost little and they are fine in daylight if you travel light. They thin out early. Land at Salzburg in the evening and the useful services have stopped.

A hire car is your third option. The roads are good and well cleared. Austrian law wants winter tyres or chains from November to mid-April, and the rental desk charges you for them. Then the car sits outside the hotel all week in a resort where the lifts start from the village. Weigh each option on what it costs you and what you have to carry.

You stay in one of two villages on a single valley floor at about 1,000 m. The skiing runs up both sides of you rather than away. Gondolas leave from the middle of each village. That is the practical reason people come back: no morning bus, no drive to a lift station.

Your lift pass is the Skicircus, and it is genuinely large. It covers over 270 km of pistes. It links this valley over the mountains to Leogang and Fieberbrunn, separate resorts on the same ticket. You can ski a full circuit of the valley and still make the last lift. That circuit is what people come for as much as any single run.

Altitude is your fair question. You sleep at about 1,000 m and the highest lifts reach roughly 2,100 m. Nobody should sell you a snow-sure glacier resort here. What you get instead is a north-facing side of the valley that holds its cover well. Heavy snowmaking on the main descents. And two partner resorts up on the pass. In a lean December the runs back down to the houses shut first, and you download on the gondola.

The other thing to know is the noise. Hinterglemm and the base of the Saalbach lifts have a serious après reputation, and the bars fill from mid-afternoon. If that is why you are coming, book in the thick of it. If it is not, the far end of the valley is quieter and the lift pass is the same.
