Which airport should I fly into for Bormio?

Bergamo or Malpensa. Both open at £413 for a private car, so the ground costs you the same either way and you can let the flight decide. You drive 165 km from Bergamo and 215 km from Malpensa, and you arrive within a quarter of an hour either way.

How far is Bormio from Bergamo Airport?

About 165 km, and you should allow two and a half hours. You spend the first half on the slow east shore of Lake Como to Colico. You spend the second on the SS38 up the Valtellina through Sondrio and Tirano. You get no motorway on the last hundred kilometres, so do not budget this drive by the distance.

Is there a shared shuttle from Bergamo Airport to Bormio?

Why does Malpensa cost the same as Bergamo when it is further away?

After the first hour they are the same journey. Both routes meet at Colico and run up the same valley road, and that valley is most of your driving. Bergamo's head start goes on the lake shore, which is slower than the motorway Malpensa uses to get there.

How long does the driver wait if the flight is late?

You get up to 60 minutes of free waiting after your scheduled landing, plus a 30-minute buffer on international arrivals. That margin matters more here than on a short route. Where will I meet my driver?

What if I'm stuck inside the airport (luggage, immigration)?

Most of these come from the same two things: reading the valley as a motorway, and reading the mountain's place names as addresses.

How long is the transfer from Bergamo Airport to Bormio?

Allow two and a half hours for roughly 165 km. The second half is the part that takes it. You leave Bergamo westward for Lecco. Then the east shore of Lake Como through the tunnels to Colico. Then inland onto the SS38, up the length of the Valtellina through Sondrio and Tirano to the head of the valley.

Past Colico there is no motorway. That is the single most useful thing to know about this journey. On an Italian map 165 km usually means well under two hours. This one does not. Saturdays in January are the slow days, when the whole valley changes over at once.

How else can you get to Bormio?

The railway gets close and stops short. The line up the Valtellina from Milan ends at Tirano, about 40 km down the valley. There is no track above it. You finish on the road, the same as everyone else.

So the honest comparison is train-plus-something, not train. From Tirano you take the connecting bus up the SS38 or a taxi off the rank. Those are the legs people forget to price when the rail fare looks cheap. If you travel light in daylight, you will be fine. If you have four ski bags on a January evening, Tirano is a long way to find out otherwise.

What should you know about skiing Bormio?

Two reputations meet here and they do not quite match. The Pista Stelvio is one of the hardest downhills on the men's World Cup circuit. The town has hosted the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships twice, in 1985 and 2005. The area those runs belong to is an ordinary size: 50 km of marked pistes on 14 lifts, longest run 6 km.

So come for the pitch rather than the mileage. You climb from the town at 1,225 m through Bormio 2000 to Bormio 3000. Both are cable-car stations, not villages. What you get here is the vertical, and a bigger area often cannot give you that.

The other half of your week is the town. Bormio has been a thermal spa since Roman times. It keeps a medieval centre and a year-round population of about 4,200. The half of your party that is not skiing has somewhere to be.

The Stelvio and Gavia passes above the town shut all winter. That is why the valley below is the only way in. Aprica sits about 60 km back down it, Madesimo is over in the Valchiavenna, and Sondrio is the town you pass halfway up. Separate lift passes. Name your own town when you book, not the valley.

Bergamo Orio al Serio has a single passenger terminal, so you have no inter-terminal transfer to plan. Clear passport control, then go to the oversize baggage point rather than standing at the belt. Lake first, then a hundred kilometres of valley

You leave Orio al Serio for Lecco, then run the east shore of Lake Como through the tunnels to Colico. That is your fast half. At Colico you turn inland onto the SS38 and follow the Valtellina past Sondrio and Tirano to the head of the valley.

There is no motorway past Colico

This is the part worth planning around. You drive the last hundred kilometres on a single carriageway through the towns on the valley floor, so 165 km takes you two and a half hours rather than the ninety minutes the distance suggests. Saturdays in January are slower again, when the whole valley changes over at once.

Winter equipment is the law, not a precaution

This road requires winter tyres or chains on board in season. Your driver's vehicle carries them as a matter of course. In a hire car it is your own responsibility and the fines are real.

The numbers after the name are altitudes

Bormio 2000 and Bormio 3000 are cable-car stations at roughly those heights, not neighbourhoods. Your bed, the baths and the medieval centre are all in the town at 1,225 m. Give your driver the street and the property name rather than a number off the piste map.

The passes above the town are shut

The Stelvio and the Gavia climb out of the top of the valley and both close for the winter. That is why every arrival comes up the SS38 from below. Worth knowing if you were planning to drive on into South Tyrol or the Val Camonica mid-week.

What the town does when you are not skiing

Malpensa stands on heathland inside the Parco Lombardo della Valle del Ticino, the first regional park Italy created. Volandia sits beside the airport rather than down a road into town, which is unusual for a museum of its size.

Aprica sits along the top of a pass at 1,181 metres, with its own ski area rising straight off the edge of town. The pass marks the main Alpine watershed, so water from one side of the village runs down to the Adda and from the other to the Oglio. Just above the houses, the Pian di Gembro reserve protects a glacial peat bog where carnivorous plants grow.

Trains up the Valtellina start here and stop at Tirano, 40 km short of Bormio, which makes Milan a sensible night either side of a long flight.
