Friedrichshafen (FDH) to Klosters in about 1 hr 50

140 km from the German shore, round the eastern end of the Bodensee through Bregenz and down that same Rhine valley. It holds the cheapest large vehicles of the five. Price it first when there are ten or more of you.

Innsbruck Airport (INN) to Klosters in about 3 hr 15

230 km west through the Arlberg tunnel, then Bludenz and Feldkirch. Its small minibuses are the cheapest of the five. You pay for that in time on the road.

Milan Malpensa (MXP) to Klosters in about 3 hr 15

245 km north through the San Bernardino tunnel and past Chur. It is where most long-haul flights land. The drive matches Innsbruck at three and a quarter hours, with the last stretch up the Rhine valley.

Zurich Airport (ZRH) to Davos in about 1 hr 50

Davos is the other half of this ski area. Your fare from Zurich is £419, the same as Klosters. The drive runs 162 km, sixteen further, and the clock reads about the same. One pass covers both villages. Pick the one your chalet sits in and book the transfer straight to it.

You pay from £419 for a private car out of Zurich. That is the cheapest vehicle anywhere on this route and it seats three. Zurich's four-seat MPV comes next, still under what any other gateway asks you for four seats.

Five is where people go wrong. Zurich's five-seat MPV is £628. Its five-seat minibus seats your party for £1,248. Search by headcount and you can be shown the second one. Innsbruck opens a five-seat minibus at £525, the lowest minibus fare of any gateway here, in return for an extra hour and a quarter in the car.

Take ten or more and you belong at Friedrichshafen. Ten, twelve and fourteen seats sit within a few pounds of each other there, so four more seats cost you almost nothing. At sixteen the answer swings back to Zurich. Coaches are cheaper out of Malpensa at both sizes.

The train genuinely reaches this one. You ride a mainline service from under Zurich Airport to Landquart, then the Rhaetian Railway climbs the Prättigau to halts at Klosters Dorf and Klosters Platz. Reckon on about three hours with a change, and on handling every ski bag yourself across the platform at Landquart.

Local buses work the valley between the villages and on over the Wolfgangpass to Davos. They are cheap and they suit a day out with nothing to carry. They run to a timetable built around the valley rather than around your flight, and the service thins in the evening.

A hire car is the third option. You get good roads and route 28 is cleared properly all season. Swiss law puts you in winter tyres through the cold months and the hire desk bills you for them. Then you park a car outside the chalet for a week in a village where the Gotschnabahn is a short walk from most beds.

In our experience the train is the only one of the three that really competes here, and every one of them still ends with you carrying your own skis somewhere. That is the part worth pricing.

Klosters is a working Graubünden village at about 1,200 m that a ski area grew onto, rather than a resort built to a plan. You get two halves. Klosters Platz holds the main station and the Gotschnabahn cable car, and Klosters Dorf sits two kilometres up the valley at the foot of the Madrisa gondola.

Those two lifts give you two very different mountains. The Gotschnabahn lifts you into the Parsenn, the big linked arena shared with Davos, where you get the long top-to-bottom runs. Madrisa faces south, catches the sun and holds the gentler terrain, so it is the side to start on if you have children with you or anyone new to it.

Off the piste the valley does the quiet things well. You can pick up cross-country trails straight out of the village and follow them into the Landwassertal beyond Davos. Snowshoe routes and winter walking paths climb from both halves of Klosters. If you ride a board and want a park, you head over to the Jakobshorn on the far side of Davos.

In summer the Prättigau opens up into roughly 700 km of marked trails, from pram-friendly paths along the river to full mountain days. At the top of the Madrisa gondola you find a herb garden and a ropes park.

Evenings here are quiet, and for most people that is the point of Klosters. Klosters Platz is the busier of the two halves and it holds the main station. Klosters Dorf sits two kilometres up the valley from it. Work out which one you want to sleep in before you book the room. That gap is a long walk in ski boots in the dark.
