You pay £181 for a private car with three seats out of Innsbruck, and you will not beat that at any size. There is no crossover further up and no party size at which another airport starts winning for you. That is unusual, and it makes the airport question a short one.

Carry one number to the flight-booking screen. A 14-seat minibus from Innsbruck costs £427. A private car for three from Munich costs £438. Innsbruck's largest vehicle is cheaper than Munich's smallest, so a full club pays less than two of you who booked the better-known airport.

Then get the village right. Nine Zillertal resorts share one lift pass, and Hintertux, the glacier in all the photographs, sits half an hour further up a side valley than the town you have booked.

The train genuinely gets you here, which is not true of every resort in the Alps. The Zillertalbahn is a narrow-gauge line from Jenbach and it terminates in Mayrhofen itself, a few minutes from the Penkenbahn. You are not left on a valley floor below the village.

What it costs you is handling. From Innsbruck it is about an hour and forty-five with a change at Jenbach onto the narrow-gauge train, and every ski bag is yours to lift twice. From Munich or Salzburg you are changing at Kufstein or Wörgl as well, and you are looking at the best part of four hours.

A hire car is the third route. The roads are good and well cleared, Austrian law wants winter tyres or chains between November and mid-April, and the rental desk will charge you for them. Then you pay for the car on every day it sits outside the hotel, and Mayrhofen is a town you can walk across in fifteen minutes.

So you have a real choice here rather than a trap, and each one costs either money or effort.

You are staying in a working Tyrolean town on the floor of the Zillertal at about 630 m, and your skiing starts above it rather than around it. Two gondolas lift you out of Mayrhofen in opposite directions: the Penkenbahn onto the Penken, where you find the main network and the bars, and the Ahornbahn onto the Ahorn, which is wide, gentle and where most people learn.

Above them sits the number you have probably read about. The Harakiri on the Penken is the steepest groomed piste in Austria at 78%, and it is one run rather than a house style. The other 140 km here are ordinary red and blue skiing, and the Ahorn side is as forgiving as any beginner mountain in the Alps.

The lift pass is why you want this valley. The Zillertal Superskipass covers every resort along the 30 km of road you drove in on, and it takes in Hintertux at the head of the Tux valley, which skis all year on its glacier. That is your insurance policy in a warm winter, and it sits half an hour away by road rather than a lift ride, so plan it as a day out.

You have picked the valley's loud end as well. Après-ski starts at the bottom of the Penkenbahn and the town fills in April for Snowbombing. If you want a quiet week, one of the smaller villages further down the same road is on the same pass.

Innsbruck is a small airport that does one thing very well in winter, which is move skiers. You are out of it quickly and on the motorway within minutes.
