Beautiful Mountains To Add To Your Bucket List
In 2003, the United Nations General Assembly declared 11 December “International Mountain Day”. To celebrate, we’re taking a look at some of the world’s most beautiful mountains.
Kirkjufell, Iceland
Kirkjufell takes its name, which means “church mountain” from its formation - resembling a church steeple. Because of its dramatic shape and location on the stunning north shore of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, we recognise it as ‘the most photographed mountain in Iceland’, even having made appearances in the Game of Thrones tv series. With its waterfalls and almost unbelievable greenery, Kirkjufell is gorgeous in any light but is truly a sight to behold under the incredible display of the Aurora Borealis.

Ama Dablam, Nepal
One of the most impressive and dangerous peaks in the world, Nepal’s Ama Dablam has long been a popular climb, even continuing to attract climbers during the pandemic. The mountain’s name can be translated as “mother’s necklace” and comes from the mountain’s hanging glacier, resembling the dablam pendant worn by elder Sherpa women, and the two extending ridges which look like arms outstretched in a motherly hug.

Depending on your pace, the Tre Cime di Lavaredo loop can be completed in under 3-4 hours, but you can also drive up if you don’t fancy the hike. Either way, the view is well worth it.

Mount Assiniboine, Canada
Mount Assiniboine is to the Canadian Rockies as the Matterhorn is to the Swiss Alps, and the pyramid peaks are actually mistaken for one another with surprising regularity despite the 13,500km distance between them. The mountain is particularly photogenic, but so is the provinical park in which it stands. A stunning site, it draws hikers, climbers, and photographers from around the globe.

Denali, USA
Permanently snow-capped, Mount Denali is the tallest mountain in North America and the third most isolated peak in the world. This majestic mountain stands proudly in Alaska’s Denali National Park, a wilderness park covering 6 million acres of land which is largely untouched by human hands and must remain so. More than 160 species of birds can be found in the surrounding parklands, as well as other wildlife including bears, wolves, and caribou among others.
