Hidden along the coast of Mexico is a secret beach inside a cave – it’s one of the country’s most intriguing natural features and one of the best beaches you’ll ever visit in your lifetime.
Playa del Amor, commonly known as the Hidden Beach, is enclosed within the Marietas Islands National Park, among a small group of federally protected, uninhabited islands 45km (28mi) off the coast of Puerto Vallarta.
It is completely encircled by rock and vegetation and can only be accessed by swimming through a long water tunnel that links the beach to the Pacific Ocean. Its unique shape and landscape is the result of military target practice and deliberate bombing in the early 1900s.
Visiting the beach
Before leaving, ensure that you have a permit (these are easy to acquire). Boats are not allowed to dock on the island so you’ll be required to swim or kayak through a 12m (40ft) long tunnel. Your boat will stop at the required distance from the island where you can jump off and swim. Most of the swimming is easy, although the currents can be strong once inside the cave leading to the beach. Some tour operators offer life jackets to assist you with the swim, so if you aren’t a strong swimmer, be sure to ask about this.

The peak season is from November to May. This is also the time of year when you can see whales. Leave as early as you can in the morning since the last operators tend to depart at 11:30AM.
