A beautiful temple is a sight to behold. Around the world, temples exist which are so astonishing that it's surreal to think they were created by human hands. Buildings worthy of the divinity travelers come to experience, span many countries and cultures. Occasionally nature and these exquisite structures come together to create an experience so breathtaking that it's impossible to believe humans made the voyage to create such a remote masterpiece.


Paro Taktsang Monastery

When thinking of a remote monastery, Paro Taktsang Monastery in Bhutan, almost immediately comes to mind. Many images and videos abound, showing the 3 elevators that take travelers up a breathtaking cliff face to see this Buddhist marvel. Perched proudly among the Himalayan landscape, the trip to see this temple is an experience all on its own. The temple consists of 4 main buildings connected by bridges and walkways, 8 caves lay in hiding behind the buildings and form part of the monastery.


Angkor Wat

The sheer size of this monastery in Cambodia is impressive all on its own, spanning more than a whopping 1618800m2. This temple was originally intended to be a Hindu temple and is said to be constructed in the 12th century. Angkor Wat currently boasts the title as the largest religious monument the world over. Although the temple is no longer in use, the structure remains an impressive reminder of Cambodia’s history in both architecture and religion, and the voyage and the view make this monastery a worthy addition to your travels.


Holy Trinity Monastery

Perched on a mountaintop overlooking Meteora, this monument, although the most popular in Greece, is unsurprisingly the most difficult to reach. Documents indicate the monastery was active as far back as 1362. For those who are intrigued by adventure and will not be put off by the difficulty of the climb, a mere 140 steps will carry you ever higher to the best view of the city. The main cathedral was built in the 15th century, while the church forms part of the original building. The church is a sight not to be missed housing artwork and frescos dating back to the 16th century.


Borobudur

This Buddhist temple is said to be built somewhere between the 8th and 9th centuries. Comprising of a multi-tiered structure, ornate statues and temple structures come together to create a monument that is roughly 2,500m2. Perched above the mist of the Kedu Valley, this structure is said to be the most impressive Buddhist monument in the world.
