Celebrating Saint Joseph, and held in the beautiful Spanish town of Valencia, Las Fallas is one of the most unique festivals in Europe, and our pick as the best of the March festivals in Spain. Giving you a chance to explore the quaint, traditional streets of Valencia, whilst soaking up the festivities and atmosphere of Spain in the thralls of excitement and celebration a trip to Las Fallas Valencia is a must this year. The father of Jesus, and a well known carpenter, Saint Joseph is the Patron Saint of carpenters, house buyers, fathers, confectioners and the working people. He’s the Patron Saint of Austria, Florence, Sicily, Turin and plenty of other countries too, but where better to celebrate the Saint of carpentry than in a city filled with beautiful buildings and stunning traditional back streets?Literally translated as ‘the fires’ in Valencian, Las Fallas celebrates Saint Joseph Day by burning everything bad before the new season is reborn. From the 1st to the 19th of March at 2pm the whole city is filled with figures made by the city’s citizens, including the children. The crowds head to the city’s terraces at 2pm and enjoy traditional Velencian food, washed down with an aperitif – or two – in the gorgeous Spanish sunshine.Although the city is alive throughout the fascinating sights of the festival, the best Las Fallas Valencia dates to pick are towards the end. On the 18th March there is a floral offering to the ‘Virgen de los Desamparados’, translated as our Lady of the Forsaken, followed by a stunning fireworks display at 2am. On the last day of the Las Fallas festival, the 19th March, there is a floral offering to Saint Joseph at 11am, followed by the gunpowder explosions filling the streets at 2pm. The procession of fire is not to be missed and starts at 7pm, leading to the burning of the figures, before a special fireworks display is held at 1am to announce the end of the festival.Head to Las Fallas Festival, Spain in March this year to gain an incredible insight into Las Fallas Valencia history, culture and the buzzing atmosphere in Spain during religious ceremonies. It’s well worth a trip!
