Why We Travel At Hoppa
Summer is an extremely popular time to travel, with airlines and tour operators offering great discounts and incentives to travel. People just love to explore when the weather is good. Whether we’re jumping on a plane to another continent or simply hailing a cab to take us across town, many of us have an inescapable need to make discoveries about our surroundings – and beyond.
Here at hoppa, we live and breathe travel – it is the lifeblood of what we do here. So we’ve taken a look at what inspires us to get out there and explore the world around us.
Jacques – Accounts Payable Executive
People are not born to never experience anything new or not to see new places. You need to get out there and see the world. The more you do it, the more you want to do it. It is fascinating to see other cultures and traditions first hand and also experience local food, drink etc. I recently had a beer that is brewed in a village in the Maluti mountains of Lesotho.
I prefer travelling with my significant other. This way, even long after the trip has ended, you still have someone to reminisce with over the experience you had. I also prefer trips that take me outdoors. There are few things in life as beautiful as nature. In fact, I love holidays that are full of activities. The more you do at your destination, the more you learn about the culture and the country you are in.
Unfortunately, though, I don’t travel nearly as much as I would like to. If I had my way, I would travel permanently.
Charl – GM
I love travelling, but life doesn’t always allow me to travel as much as I would want to. I love skiing trips as it is something totally different from what the normal destinations in South Africa can give you. One of my best trips was to Courchevel situated in the French Alps. Beach destinations, like Greece, are also amazing – especially the island Sifnos, I think what attracts me to the Greek islands is definitely the scenery and the amazing food.
Beach holidays are always good fun travelling with family, but places like Bali are a whole different story. On these type of holidays, it’s important to take the right people since a lot of time is spent partying. Other things that I love about travelling include being introduced to different cultures, spending time with the people I love, enjoying good food, and just getting away from my daily routine.
Mohammed – Web Developer
I don’t get to travel a lot these days due to budget and time constraints, but when I do, I always like to talk to the locals to learn more about their culture and values, so my biggest motivator to travel is simply learning to understand others.
I also choose to travel to see family and friends – and will always go with someone, never alone. I prefer city breaks mostly, but sometimes I enjoy a beach holiday as well. I prefer quiet and relaxed holidays, and in some rare opportunity I don’t mind activities – not sure why.
Roeline – Financial Controller
If I had to travel as much as I want to, then I would never be home! I love travelling with other people, although I almost always find myself wandering off and forget a bit about the things and people around me. When I travel, I will always make time to have some me-time – this includes taking a walk alone, losing myself in a good book, or listening to music. But I like to think that a big part of life is to make memories – what better way to make these than with the people you love.
Beach holidays probably top my list of favourite holidays. Although, I think my list of places to see covers a bit of everything – for me something adventurous, chilling and doing nothing, and some impulsiveness goes a long way. I will definitely limit museums, and looking at old historic buildings – I will, however, visit the main tourist attractions. I like to do nothing and enjoy the surroundings, but tell me to jump out of a plane, and I will be the first one. A good combination of some activities and being horizontal doing nothing will be the ideal.
For me, travelling is a great way to make memories, experience different cultures, to eat, and enjoy a glass of wine (yes to eat and drink wine is a motivator for me) – life is a puzzle and, by travelling, I get to add some really funky colours to my life puzzle.
Tshegofatso – Hoppa Care Team
My biggest motivator to travel is amazing adverts that catch my eye as well as travellers who tell you about their incredible experiences. I have this temptation to get out of my comfort zone for some time, and so I choose to travel because it is always great to explore and experience different countries and places.
I don’t get to travel as much as I’d like to, though, due to work. But when I do travel, I prefer doing so with friends and a significant other. Travelling alone is amazing, but this depends on where you are traveling to. There are many reasons, and some can be quite personal. Personally, I prefer beach holidays as well as camping trips – either relaxed or filled with activities, as it all depends on the reason for your excursion or holiday.
Jason – Accounts Receivable
I wish I could travel more often, but bills and responsibilities make it a bit difficult for me. I used to travel with my girlfriend as we share the same interests, and my favourite types of holidays include camping in the wild or trips to a cabin in the woods. My ideal holiday is relaxed, with almost no activities.
Leandra – Financial Accountant
I definitely don’t travel as often as I would like to, because I’m really terrible at planning and I normally take leave from work on number 99 then I don’t have time to plan anything or save up for travelling.
But I love travelling as it is relaxing, and I would like to see more of the world one day. I don’t mind travelling with either friends or family. It just depends on where we’re going or who planned the holiday and invited me to go along – I’ve travelled with friends and family before and enjoyed all the trips.
I would say that I enjoy the beach the most. I like going on holiday to relax, and laying in the sun on the beach is definitely one of my favourites, but sometimes activities are nice – it all depends on the surroundings and where I’m going.
Alison – CFO
I choose to travel because I enjoy it, even though work often seems to get in the way. Travelling allows me to relax and experience a different culture and get outdoors and exercise in new environments. I especially love skiing, cycling or trekking and being active on holiday. I love to share my experiences with others, so I prefer to travel with friends and family. And it’s great when a holiday is full of activities as you really feel you are doing something different.
Isle – Accounts Payable Manager
Travelling allows me to make memories that my son can keep forever. I don’t get to travel as much as I want to because life happens all the time, but when I do get away, I prefer to travel with my husband and son. What’s the fun in leaving them behind? We enjoy the bushveld where it’s quiet, with minimal electronics, and where the milky way is breathtakingly beautiful. I don’t plan a lot of activities since life is busy enough – I want to relax on holiday.
Haider – Management Account
I travel every 3 to 4 months but would love to change it to a monthly occurrence, so I get to see other countries more often, but time and other commitments are the main reason I don’t get to travel monthly. I prefer to travel with friends on beach holidays with as many activities as possible. I don’t like going to quiet places and prefer lively and upbeat destinations.
I never have a relaxing holiday. Most of my holidays are on party islands, so I always plan to recover once I am back in the UK. My biggest motivator to travel is to experience new cultures and traditions. I love meeting new people and expanding my network and going on holiday is one of the best ways to do it.
Matthew – COO
I love travelling but don’t get to travel as often as I would like. Work, kids, and just a general lack of enough time prevent me from doing as much as I would like. But when I do go, it allows me to see things I haven’t seen before – things that are different from home. I prefer a holiday that is a combination of relaxation and activities. I find it hard to just sit in the sun and do nothing for too long. I want to relax for a while and then go and do something.
I much prefer to travel with family and friends, as I’d rather experience something with someone else than alone. I like to try different things when it comes to a specific type of holiday. I’ve been lucky enough to visit quite a few countries, and have been on beach holidays, city breaks and spent time travelling around different countries for a longer period of time. I haven’t yet been on a skiing holiday so need to try that out at some point.
Valentina – Purchasing Manager
I travel quite often, but it is never enough! Travelling is always a unique experience where you get to discover something different which takes you out from your comfort zone – a country, a city, a culture, new people, new places, and where you end up knowing something new about yourself as well. Every time I come back from a trip, I feel I have grown, and I am enriched by the experiences I have lived.
I like planning trips with my friends over the summer period. We choose destinations where we can explore, try new activities, and meet new friends. Destinations chosen are normally in Southern Europe, where the options are endless. I plan family trips over the winter period, normally to Northern destinations, where we can enjoy small mountain resorts and gather at the end of the day in front of the fire.
I currently live very close to the beach, therefore at the moment, I prefer to travel towards the mountains, where I can ski and enjoy nature. I also love city breaks, and I try as much as possible to travel over the weekends, even if it is for just a couple of days. It helps me in keeping a balance between professional and personal life and the demanding rhythms of our everyday life.
I normally prefer active holidays. I like exploring new places and get to know the local culture. If I am visiting a new city, I try to book a walking tour or a typical activity organised by locals. It is the perfect way to understand a culture and to support small-medium companies working in the local travel industry.
I see travelling as a way to challenge myself and to grow – it gives me new perspectives, new ways to look at the world and at people. It changes the way I look at things, makes me feel grateful, and brings changes that are impacting my life in a positive way. Travelling opens my mind and keeps me curious and willing to learn.

Considering the life of today – everyone gets super busy, so travelling always helps our family reconnect. In addition to reconnecting, traveling is always a great way to make new memories. Whether we're wandering through ancient cities, climbing mountains, or just sitting by the pool, travelling with my family and boyfriend is a great way to make memories that we can share for a lifetime.
While I don’t get to travel as much as I’d like, the excitement increases when you wait until the December holidays. My dream destinations include Borra Borra and Italy, but my top option would always be a holiday close to or on the beach. There is nothing more peaceful than waking up to a view of the beach and the soothing sounds of the waves, the cocktails at Moyos, and the beautiful view of Table Mountain.
I like to keep busy on most days when travelling – experiencing new locations, food, and hiking. It's great fun to experience new things and cultures. The big range of amazing foods is a massive motivator to travel!
Minet – Spanish Department
I believe a change of scenery always does one well. Just changing up your routine and having that change of scenery helps to get away from the business of our everyday lives and stress. As would be the case with most people, though, finances are a huge factor as to why I don’t travel more. I am also a single mom with an almost five-year-old son, so travelling is by no means an easy thing to do at the moment.
When I do travel, though, I prefer to travel with other people. Close family and friends always make the experience worthwhile and when there are unplanned “glitches” along the way my loved ones always make it easier. I like being outdoors, enjoying nature, and being in a relaxing environment.
When I go on a holiday, I like sightseeing and getting out, but I would much rather have a homemade meal in self-catering accommodation than go out to dinner every night. Of course, a holiday should have relaxation, but I would hate it if I did not do any activities at all. It’s not easy to get the right balance between the two things, but a holiday should include time for activities as well as some relaxation.

Seeing different places, spending time with friends and family, getting away from routine, and learning something new about different places while there are the main reasons that I love to travel. Although, because other obligations often take priority, I don’t get to travel as much as I like.
I don’t mind going solo, but the advantages of going with friends is that you save a bit more on accommodation and it makes going out for meals more fun. You also have more memorable photos with others. The advantage of going on your own, though, is that you get to squeeze as much into your trip that you’re able to and get to see and do all the things you want to.
Beach and outdoor holidays are great for relaxing, but city breaks are a great way to learn about people and other cultures. It’s also always nice to relax, but I like to do something that makes each holiday memorable.
Alexandra – Head of Purchasing
I would like to travel more, but family and work keep me away from that dream. Travelling is a great way to create memories with family and friends, though. When I’m with family, it’s great to head to the beach, but I prefer city breaks with friends. On a beach holiday, I prefer to relax, but on city breaks, I prefer to see a much as possible. Travelling allows me to meet new cultures, develop new mentalities, educate myself, and learn how other people live.
Daniel – Head of SEO
Does anyone travel as much as they’d like to?! I’d live on holiday if I could! Mrs being a school teacher means we’re always a bit restricted to when we travel, but really there are no other excuses!
When I travel, it has to be with family and friends for me as it is easier to share the experience than to have that ‘you should have seen it!’ conversation when I get home. I used to love adventure type holidays, and still really enjoy exploring new places, but as the years go by the appeal of relaxing by the pool with an open bar is definitely growing. I never want to return home feeling more tired than before the holiday – but at the same time, there’s so much to see and do it’d be a waste not to explore it and see what’s out there.
I’m not sure where my passion for travel comes from. There’s something exciting about venturing into the unknown and exploring new places – not knowing what you’re going to see and do and breaking out of the ‘norm’ has a big appeal. Variety is something... right?
Stephan – IT Security Engineer
I like travelling with friends. It doesn’t mean we do everything together, but it is nice having a bunch of mates at the same destination as you and of course travelling with a significant other is just as good. I like everything, from snow-covered mountains to sandy beaches to deep bushveld. I like it all.
I don’t get to travel as much as I’d like, though. It’s pretty expensive to travel with the South African rand being so weak against foreign currencies. But travelling is a great way to experience things I can’t experience in my hometown. It’s lovely to get out of the bubble every now and then.
My perfect day includes exploring the location where I am from 9 am to around 4 pm and then finishing off with a relaxing beer or 2 or 6 or 10...
Ballie – Business Developer
Travelling is important to me because it helps me to create memories and broaden my perspective on life. I definitely do not get to travel as much as I want to, though. Obviously, the business keeps me occupied and travelling on a budget or not depends a lot on the length you are going for – travelling for three months, or 6 months break can work out much the same as a two week holiday.
When I do travel, I vary solo adventures with group travel. It depends on the moment – is it time to reflect or go wakeboarding or kite surfing? Normally, I’d do these alone because I haven’t found a significant other that loves to sit on a windy beach while I am having the time of my life. I also love meeting people when I travel, but there is something nice travelling with a friend or a girlfriend since it’s nice to share the special moments
I love going on beach holidays, skiing, or anything outdoors – city breaks are not really for me. What I do on holiday also depends on the mood and the goal. I love to be asleep day and night, but I also love exploring and getting the blood flowing.
Vicky – Content Executive
I read something once that said “if travelling was free, you’d never see me again” – that resonated so strongly with me. Unfortunately, I don’t have nearly enough money or enough time to do all the travelling my heart desires. Having said that, though, I do travel as much as I can within my financial and time constraints, so I really can’t complain.
I think travelling is so important. It teaches you so much about the world around you and also about yourself. It broadens your horizons and makes you a more rounded person. My dad used to refer to travelling as “making memory moments”. I’ve lost both my parents now, both far too young when they passed on – but one of the things that I can honestly say helped me to make peace with this is the fact that they travelled a LOT. The impression that I have of them is of people that ticked loads of things off their bucket lists and lived full, happy lives.
The type of travel I personally prefer is the type that gives you a lot of value for money. Zanzibar, for example, is so crazy cheap, the locals are very friendly, the food is great, and the place is so beautiful. Holidays like that also give you the freedom to relax on the days you want to and to go off and explore on the days you want to be busy because it is affordable to do so. You can stay for longer and travel more frequently if you aren’t breaking the bank in the process. Having said that, I do have some expensive trips on my bucket list, including the Great Barrier Reef, the Northern Lights, and New York City.
The other issue is getting people to travel with me. I’m not a solo traveller by any stretch of the imagination. I’m quite extroverted, so it’s an absolute must for me to have travelling companions – and if the trip is affordable, then it’s easier to convince someone else to tag along!
