Best Budget Summer Breaks in Europe: Where to Find Cheap Summer Holidays in 2026
A memorable summer holiday should leave you with stories to tell, rather than a bank balance you are afraid to check. Fortunately, there are still European destinations where you can enjoy long lunches, sunny afternoons, cultural discoveries and evening drinks without stretching your holiday budget too far.
Finding them requires looking beyond the price of a flight. Accommodation, meals, local transport, attractions, and the journey to your hotel can all form part of the ‘hidden costs’ once you arrive.
To see where your money could go furthest this summer, hoppa analysed popular European destinations based on:
- average three-star hotel prices,
- food and drink costs,
- public transport fares,
- airport transfer prices,
- the number of budget-friendly attractions,
and all to find the cheapest summer holiday destinations.
Which European destination is best for your trip?
Choose Tirana, Albania for an affordable hotel stay: Three-star hotels average £41.72 per night, the lowest price in the study, leaving more in your budget for day trips, dinners and an extra night away.
Choose Skopje, North Macedonia for inexpensive food and drink: A meal at an inexpensive restaurant averages £5.61, while a local draught beer costs £2.11. Both are the lowest prices recorded across the 51 destinations.
Choose Belgrade, Serbia for getting around: Public transport is free, giving you the freedom to explore different neighbourhoods, riverside spots and cultural attractions without adding to your daily spending.
Choose Corfu, Greece for an affordable arrival: Private airport transfers start at £7.43, the lowest price in the study, so more of your budget can go towards seaside lunches, boat trips and drinks by the water.
Choose Rome, Italy for sightseeing: With 1,074 budget-friendly attractions, the Italian capital offers more affordable things to see and do than any other destination analysed.
Europe’s best-value summer holiday destinations for 2026
1. Prague, Czechia: Affordability and endless things to do
The Czech capital takes first place because it combines affordable prices with an exceptional selection of sights and activities. Its 619 budget-friendly attractions include the Prague Castle grounds and the 17th-century Waldstein Garden (and is more than twice the study average of 272 attractions).
A meal at an inexpensive restaurant averages £8.58, around a third below the overall average of £13.25. A local draught beer costs approximately £2.32, compared with an average of £4.05 across all the destinations analysed.
Three-star hotels average £86.96 per night, compared with £141 in London. Prague may not have the cheapest rooms in the ranking, but you’ll get strong value in return, with museums, viewpoints, historic landmarks and atmospheric neighbourhoods all within easy reach.
Remember: Booking Prague airport transfers before travelling can also help you start your break smoothly and keep arrival costs predictable.
2. Antalya, Türkiye: A sunshine escape cheaper than many European city breaks
Antalya brings together many of the ingredients you might want in a summer escape: sunshine, warm evenings, beaches and inviting places to eat. Its second-place ranking shows that you do not always need a premium budget to enjoy a coastal holiday.
At £50.15 per night, the average three-star hotel costs almost exactly half the study average of £99.50. Across a four-night stay, that difference could leave you with nearly £200 to spend on a boat trip, a memorable dinner, another night away or simply more time relaxing beside the water.
Antalya also has the second-lowest private airport transfer price in the study. At just £8.51, the journey into the city costs far less than the £39.82 average across the destinations analysed. That means the holiday can begin with a straightforward arrival and more money left for the experiences ahead.
Chris Harrington, Travel Expert and Managing Director at hoppa, recommends making time for both Antalya’s historic centre and its coastline:
3. Skopje, North Macedonia: Where everyday spending goes the furthest
No destination performed better across the food and drink categories than Skopje. A meal at an inexpensive restaurant costs approximately £5.61, less than half the study average of £13.25. A local draught beer averages £2.11, the lowest price recorded.
At £42.01 per night, Skopje has the second-cheapest hotel prices in the entire top 10, narrowly behind Tirana.
For anyone looking for an easygoing city break with fewer crowds and more room in the budget, Skopje offers exceptional value. Savings on accommodation, meals, and local travel can quickly add up even on a short break.

Tirana, Albania: The cheapest city for a hotel stay
A more affordable hotel can completely change the shape of your summer break. It might mean staying for an extra night, taking a day trip or choosing a more memorable restaurant without stretching the overall budget.
Tirana recorded the lowest average three-star hotel cost in the study at £41.72 per night. That's less than half the overall average of £99.50. Across a four-night break, choosing Tirana instead of an average-priced destination could reduce your accommodation spending by more than £230.
Skopje follows closely behind at £42.01, while Riga (£43.61), Sarajevo (£48.25) and Belgrade (£48.92) all sit comfortably below the £50 mark.
Make Tirana’s low hotel prices work even harder with advice from Chris Harrington:
Belgrade, Serbia: More freedom to explore for less
Belgrade is a city made for moving between neighbourhoods, cultural spots, riverside areas and lively evening venues. According to the data analysed, it is also the most affordable destination in the study for getting around.
Belgrade was the only destination to record free public transport. Tirana follows with an average one-way fare of just £0.36, with Skopje close behind at £0.56.
That advantage is accompanied by the city's wider affordability. Hotel prices average under £50 per night, while meals and drinks are significantly cheaper than the European averages recorded across the study.
Keeping transport spending close to zero gives you more freedom to explore without planning each day around taxi fares or deciding whether another neighbourhood is worth the journey.

Corfu and Antalya offer the lowest airport transfer costs
Airport transfers are often overlooked during the planning process, yet they can be one of the first unexpected expenses you encounter after landing. While people may worry about the expense of airport transfers, these destinations offer the opportunity to get reliable private transfers for less than £10.
Corfu recorded the lowest private transfer cost in the study at £7.43, narrowly ahead of Antalya at £8.51 and Rhodes at £9.27.
All three destinations sit far below the study average of £39.82. If you’re heading to Corfu or Rhodes. In Antalya, it adds to a wider combination of affordable accommodation, food and transport.

Chris Harrington, Travel Expert and Managing Director at hoppa comments:
Methodology
hoppa is a global airport transfer aggregator helping travellers reach destinations across Europe and beyond, including locations outside major cities. As interest in affordable European breaks is very popular, hoppa has created this report to highlight Europe’s cheapest summer holiday destinations.
We created a list of popular European cities and created a normalised score out of 10 based on the following factors:
1. Average three-star hotel cost
We used booking.com to get the average 3-star hotel costs for each city. These were converted from Euros to Sterling on 09.06.2026 at an exchange rate of 0.8573.
2. Average price of a pint
We took the average price of ‘domestic draught beer (0.5 litre)’ from Numbeo.
3. Average price of a meal out
We took the average costs for ‘meal at an inexpensive restaurant’ from Numbeo.
4. Cheapest private car transfer cost
We used hoppa to find the cheapest private transfer cost, using the most popular airport for each city, and the city centre as our start and end points. (example: Valencia Airport (VLC) to Valencia City (Spain), ES). The date we used for our quotes was at 9:30am on the 13th of June 2026.
5. Average public transport costs
We took the costs for a ‘one-way ticket (local transport)’ from Numbeo.
6. Number of budget-friendly attractions
We used Tripadvisor to get the number of attractions for each city, using the ‘budget-friendly’ filter.
All data is accurate as of June 2026.
