Sultanahmet

Sultanahmet, once Constantinople, is an area within the Faith district of Instanbul, Turkey. Faith is the primary district within Istanbul and is home to many of the main buildings and headquarters, including the governor's office, Istanbul University (founded in the 1400’s) and the police headquarters. Sultanahmet is also in very close proximity to two of the most magnificent masterpieces of world architecture, the Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque.

Sultanahmet is a wonderfully diverse area of Istanbul, where history meets modernity, and the Turkish way of life is easily adopted by visitors. Wonderful ancient architecture is visible, as well as new, contemporary buildings- and they live harmoniously in this peaceful district of the city. Trams run from Sultanahmet around the city, however the area itself has a lot on offer meaning you won’t need to leave! Restaurants, bars, shops and other attractions are readily available, and you’re sure to get a true taste of Turkey whether you’re visiting for business or pleasure. However, due to Sultanahmet being such a draw for tourists, you may want to take a tram or walk into one of the more hidden, local parts of the city for more pocket friendly prices. If you can, hire a guide to take you around the shopping areas- but avoid the Grand Bazaar unless you’re willing to haggle. 

Sultanahmet has everything visitors could ask for and more- it’s recommended to buy a museum pass for all the wonderful galleries and museums on offer in this area, including the incredible Ibrahim Pasha Palace museum or the Mosaic Museum. There’s a historical hammam (Turkish bath) between the stunning Blue Mosque and Aya Sofia, originally built by Sinan, the famous architect, and traces of an ancient hippodrome can be seen behind the mosque too. 

For dining out, there are a number of fantastic eateries in the area, many with wonderful views of the city. There are also plenty of shops and delicatessans offering Turkish delights (perfect to bring home as a souvenir) and baklava, as well as atmospheric cafes and bars to spend an evening in! The atmosphere in Sultanahmet is unparalleled, and many returning visitors speak of the beautiful lights in the evening in this area, showing off the districts stunning historical architecture. There are also a number of hidden gems in the city, including the underground tunnels and Cisterns, which can be explored with the right guide. This area of the city is extremely walkable, too. However, make sure to prepare yourself to be invited into every restaurant you pass!
