Livingstone town

Livingstone is a historic colonial city and present capital of the Southern Province of Zambia, a tourism centre for Victoria Falls (Mosi-oa-Tunya) lying 10 km (6.2 mi) north of the Zambezi River, and a border town with road and rail connections to Zimbabwe on the other side of the Falls. Its population was estimated in 2002 at 97,000[1].

Livingstone acts as a gateway to the magnificent attractions of the Falls and the Mosi Oa Tunya National Park. In fact, the majority of visitors catch no more than a fleeting glimpse of the town as they transfer from the airport to their accommodation close to Victoria Falls.

However, if youre interested in local culture and history, your lodge can arrange a trip into town to visit the Livingstone Museum - the oldest museum in Zambia, with interesting displays of David Livingstone memorabilia - and the bustling Maramba Market, which sells everything from vegetables and cooking pots to handcrafts and colourful fabric.

Where to Stay
Recommended Livingstone accommodation is not in the town itself, but spread along the Zambezi River: choose from decadent colonial hotels like the The Royal Livingstone, luxurious tented camps including Toka Leya or secluded bush lodges such as Sindabezi Island Camp.
