Lisbon is a city of gorgeous architecture bathed in warm light with blue skies and lined with sparkling sea views. The city is characterized by its narrow cobbled streets with quaint yellow trams winding between colourful stone houses and tiled walls. For sunshine and warmth, Lisbon is the perfect place, summer spans from May to October, and even in winter the temperatures rarely drop below an average English summer day.
Situated on the West Coast of Portugal, Lisbon is one of the oldest cities in the world, bursting full of a history of trade and culture and has retained all of its traditional 16th Century style. Lisbon is the ideal city for a flaneur, and a day can be spent sublimely strolling around the ten different neighbourhoods, – known as bairros – taking in scrolling balconies and tucked away tabernas, walking down steps that take you to leafy courtyards with fountains and yellow tiles.
You can't move for amazing architecture in Lisbon, a spectacular example being the Jeronimos Monastery, dating to the beginning of the 16th Century. The monastery is crammed with ornate scrolling reliefs and presents a garden with topiary and fountains in the middle. Climbing towers at St Georges Church or the Bélem Tower will give you incredible views of the red roof topped houses, spread out higgledy piggledy on the rocky outcrop leading to the sea.
Lisbon is famous for it's tiles, and you will find examples on every street, from the sides of buildings or fountains to courtyards and museums. The Tile museum has centuries of exquisite Portuguese tiles and contains the largest, most extraordinary tile fresco, or azulejo. The building itself – an old convent – is magnificent, with baroque chapels and extravagant gold ornamentation covering many surfaces. For more modern tastes, the Berardo Museum is free and contains modern art from all over the world, while fashion lovers should seek out the design and fashion museum. For green spaces, check out the sprawling Monsanto Forest Park and take a peaceful walk.
Lisbon is known for its seafood, and the best place to eat is in one of the many tiled tabernas across the city, where you’ll find fresh fish accompanied by fine Portuguese wine. When evening falls, people will line the streets, enjoying a drink outside while listening to jazz in the warm Mediterranean night. After a day’s walking, seeking out somewhere with Fado, traditional and heartbreakingly beautiful Portuguese singing, will capture Lisbon's charm perfectly.
