Modlin is one small building, which makes meeting a driver straightforward. Keep three things in mind as you land:

Everybody comes out of the same door. There is one arrivals area and your driver will be standing in clear view of it.
It empties fast and it is a long way from a city. Once a flight has cleared, the terminal goes quiet. That is the moment to have something already arranged.
Oversized items come off separately. Pick up a bike box, a set of skis or a buggy before you head out to the meeting point.

Modlin brings every flight into a single arrivals area, through passport control and baggage reclaim. Claim skis, a buggy or a bike box at the outsize baggage point first. Your e-ticket carries the driver's name, the vehicle registration and a number to call. Check the code on your boarding pass: WMI means Modlin, 40 km out of town, and WAW means Chopin, in the city itself.

Minibuses and coaches

Head for the coach parking bay, signed from the terminal exit. Confirm your group size when you book and the right vehicle is waiting there.

You get up to 60 minutes of free waiting after your flight lands. On an international arrival a 30-minute buffer is added before the waiting time starts, which covers a single passport desk and an outsize item to collect.

Delayed, diverted or landing early?

Your driver tracks the flight from pushback. Fog over the Masovian plain is the hazard to know about here, and it occasionally sends an inbound to Chopin, Łódź or Kraków. Poland uses the złoty and cards are accepted almost everywhere, including the market stalls and the ticket machines. Prices on this page are shown in pounds. Most people round a restaurant bill up and leave it there. Your transfer is paid in advance, so no money changes hands in the vehicle.

Peak traffic

The S7 into Warsaw runs well in open country and then meets the city, which fills on weekday mornings and again late in the afternoon. Land at midday and you are through it. Your fare stays where it is either way.

Avoid unofficial taxis

Walk past anybody offering you a lift inside the building. The licensed cars at the stand are fine and display a tariff card, which is worth checking before you climb in. A hoppa driver waits with your surname on a board and never approaches strangers.

The honest alternative

A bus from the terminal connects with a train into Warsaw, and that chain is the thriftiest way to reach the city. It asks for two connections with every bag in your hands, then a tram or a walk at the far end. In daylight with one rucksack it is fine. At midnight in December it is a long evening.

What to do around Modlin and Warsaw?

With a late flight out, there is more than enough here to fill a day.

Modlin Fortress stands where the Narew joins the Vistula and keeps the longest barracks building in Europe along its northern wall.
Czerwińsk nad Wisłą, upriver, has a Romanesque abbey that has been in use for more than eight hundred years.
Kampinos National Park spreads between Modlin and Warsaw, with marked winter trails through pine forest and sand dunes.

What time should the car reach you on the morning you fly out of Modlin?

Book the homeward leg alongside the first one and a vehicle stands outside at your chosen hour. Free waiting on a departure runs to 15 minutes from that time. Have the cases shut and be downstairs well within it.

Now reason back from the gate. A European departure wants a clear 120 minutes inside Modlin. In front of that sits 45 to 60 min from central Warsaw, or 30 to 45 min from the Old Town. Add fifteen more for a weekday rush or the season's first proper snow. That margin is far easier to build in now than to find at six in the morning on the S7.

How far is Warsaw Modlin Airport from Warsaw?

About 40 km north-west of the city centre by road, which is a good deal further out than Chopin. Expect three quarters of an hour of driving, or a little over at a busy hour. Most of it is open motorway rather than city streets.

Why does Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki cost more than Warsaw?

Private hire carries a minimum fare, and a journey of five to fifteen minutes sits right on it. So the short hop into Nowy Dwór comes to £56 while the much longer run into Warsaw is £52. The figures in the table are the ones to go by. Prices are indicative.

Is Modlin the same airport as Warsaw Chopin?

No. They are two airports 40 km apart. WMI means Modlin, out beyond the city at Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki. WAW means Warsaw Chopin, which sits inside Warsaw itself. Several airlines fly to both, so trust the three letters on the boarding pass rather than the airline name.

What is the cheapest way from Modlin into Warsaw?

There are eight of us. Can we all travel together?

Yes. A private minibus carries up to 22 passengers with one bag each, and a private coach seats up to 60, so eight on a stag weekend, or two households renting one flat off Nowy Świat, travels together on one fixed all-in price. Give your final headcount and luggage count at booking so the right size meets you. Larger vehicles carry longer cancellation windows: 48 hours for 8 to 14 seaters and 14 days for 16 seats and above. Cancel a 16+ seater less than 14 days but more than 7 days and you get half the booking value back. Inside 7 days you get nothing.

What are the roads from Modlin like in winter?

Open motorway for most of the way, cleared and gritted as a priority route. Snow slows the whole road at once. Your fare was fixed weeks earlier, so a slow crawl down the S7 takes minutes off your evening and nothing off your card. Conditions get checked before anyone sets out.

Can I get a transfer between Modlin and Chopin?

Yes. Name one airport as your pick-up, the other as your destination, and the price shows at the booking step. Travellers want it when a connection has been split between the two, and the drive is 40 km each way. Warsaw Chopin has its own page if you are landing at that end.

Can I get from Modlin to Warsaw late at night?

Can I cancel or change my Modlin transfer?

Yes. For cars and vehicles up to 7 seats, cancel at least 24 hours before travel for a full refund. For 8 to 14 seat vehicles the window is 48 hours, and for 16 seats and above it is 14 days. Does the driver take payment at Modlin?

No. You pay in full at booking and your e-ticket is your receipt. hoppa accepts Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Maestro and PayPal at checkout. The driver has nothing to collect. Tipping in Poland is modest and entirely optional: a few złoty in the hand is plenty.
