Innsbruck (“bruck” from German meaning bridge) is the capital city of the federal state of Tyrol in western Austria and an internationally renowned winter sports centre. It is in the broad Inn Valley and the name dates back to 1187 but the area is populated since the early stone age. To the north is Nordkette (Hafelekar, 2334 m, 7656 feet.). To the south are Patscherkofel (2246 m, 7368 feet.) and Serles (2718 m, 8916 feet.). Innsbruck hosted the 1964 and 1976 Winter Olympics.
