Nowadays, Bodrum is known as a centre for art, trade and entertainment, with its Aegan heritage being preserved and unmistakable from the iconic whitewashed houses with bright-blue trim. The boutiques on the street of Cumhuriyet Caddesi sell traditional Turkish goods like hand-made sandals, fezzes, and harem slippers. During the evenings, Bodrum has a lively nightlife that is a mixture of traditional Turkish music and 24 hour international clubs. A relatively new holiday destination, Bodrum attracts most of its visitors to its port on the Bodrum peninsula in the southern end of Turkey. The peninsula is also home to the best beaches, orchards of tangerine and olive groves, as well as fishing harbours in the north.

**Sight-seeing:** Bodrum is steeped in history and has a multitude of ancient buildings that are open to the public. The unmissable Castle of St Peter (also known as Bodrum Castle) is framed by two bays and contains the Museum of Underwater Archaeology. Mausoleum of Mausolus, the Greek tomb built between 353 and 350 BC lies in ruins whereas restoration projects on the Myndos Gate, the 7km long city walls of Bodrum and The Ottoman Tower have begun to the west of Bodrum Harbour.

**Boating:** From a 5 - 15 day 'blue voyage' aboard a gulet, a traditional wooden two or three-masted sailing vessel, to daily boat trips from Bodrum Milta Marina, Bodrum offers an abundance of boating experiences. Sailing up and down the coast of the Gulf of Goköva, allows passengers amazing views of the Castle of St Peter. From aboard a boat, views of hidden coves along the coastline provide the perfect spots for snorkelling and scuba diving.

At a glance

The Castle of St. Petrus, or Petronium, as it was known in the 15th century, was built by the Knights of Rhodes during the crusades of the middle ages, and overlooks the harbour and the international marina of Bodrum. The castle is surrounded by a wall which contains around 250 coats of arms and armour belonging to the knights that served there. During the Ottoman capture of 1522 the church within the castle grounds was converted into a mosque. Five towers known as the English tower, the Italian tower, the German tower, the French tower, and the Snake tower make up the castle, and the grounds house a mosque and the Museum of Underwater Archaeology. The museum was founded in the castle in 1964 and received a special award for European Museum of the Year in 1995. Shipwrecks make up most of the exhibitions within the museum's 14 departments, as well as collections of ancient artefacts.

Castle of St. Peter

The tomb of the City King Mausolus, the Mausoleum of Mausolus, takes style inspiration from Egyptian, Greek, and Lycian designs. Built using white marble over 1500 years ago by Pythius of Priene and Satyros, the tomb of Maulsolus' wife, Artemisia II of Caria, sits on a hill above the city. The tomb is at the centre of a private courtyard on a stone platform, flanked by lions with a staircase leading to the top of the platform. A wall covered in statues from Greek mythology, including gods and goddesses, surrounds the tomb. Sadly, the shrine is in ruins and most of the structure is not evident due to damage. During the 13th century the tomb was damaged by an earthquake and faced further destruction by crusades in 1522 AD.

Mausoleum of Mausolus	

As the entrance to the ancient city of Halicarnassus, the Myndos Gate was built in 360 BC, it was protected by a broad moat which is at the front of the gate. The gate is situated 3km from Gumbet, in central Bodrum, on the harbour. The remains of the gate were recently restored, giving visitors a better picture of what the structure was like. Also on the site is a Turkish cemetery, there are some vaulted tombstones that date back to the Latin period and the Ottoman Shipyard. The shipyard was home to the Ottoman fleet and also has a tower that dates back to 1775. Situated on the northwest part of the Bodrum Harbour, these days the tower exhibits a variety of art.

Blue Voyage	

As another legacy from the ancient Halicarnassus, the Bodrum Amphitheatre was built in the 4th century BC, during the reign of King Mausolus. Completed in the Roman era, the theatre consists of three main parts; the Skene (stage), the Orchestra (half-oval part) and the Cavea audience seating with a capacity of 13,000. Situated on the road to Gumbet, the theatre sits on the hillside overlooking Bodrum, with fantastic views of Castle St. Peter, the harbour and panoramic views of the Bodrum peninsula. Today the amphitheatre is well-preserved with inscriptions still visible on the seats from those who sat there. To really enjoy the atmosphere of the amphitheatre, it hosts open air concerts and shows from local musicians and singers during the high season.
