Washington Dulles International Airport transfer — hoppa

Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) Transportation Shuttles, Taxis & Private Cars to Washington DC, Arlington & Tysons Corner

Arrive happy with Washington (Dulles) airport transfers & rides

Dulles is not Reagan. You have just landed 26 miles west of the National Mall, six times further than DCA, with the Dulles Toll Road and rush-hour I-66 between you and your hotel. Metered taxis quote you a fare and then itemise the $4.50 to $7.00 toll on top, while ride-share queues at door 4 stretch past every Monday morning when Congress is in session.

Pre-booked Washington Dulles airport transfers fix all of that before you board your flight, with a named driver tracking your landing, holding a sign at door 2 arrivals, and a price that already includes the Toll Road. hoppa connects 40M+ travellers to 70,000+ vetted local operators across 182+ countries, with the institutional trust of Mastercard, UnionPay and Alipay behind every booking.

Shared from $24 · Private car from $79 · Minivan from $129 to downtown DC and the wider region · Journey time 35–75 minutes depending on zone and traffic. Prices are indicative. Check hoppa.com for live availability.

Everything you need to know before you book

Pick a topic to see the most common questions travelers ask at this airport — fixed prices, vehicles, delays, deals, trust, and managing your booking.

What does it cost to my resort?

What's the price from the airport to my resort?

Prices vary by route, vehicle, season, and time of day. Enter your dates and party size above to see your fixed quoted price for the exact journey.

What's included in my fixed price?

Your quoted price covers vehicle hire, fuel, the driver's service fee (tips), tolls, parking, taxes, and any entry, congestion or airport-access fees on the route. There's nothing extra to pay the driver on arrival.

What's NOT included — what could cost extra?

Charged separately and disclosed before they apply: overtime fees if your trip runs longer than reserved, excess-mileage fees if you exceed your booked distance, night-time service fees on some routes (22:00–08:00), holiday or event surcharges in some regions, additional child seats beyond the first one (which is free), and extra stops you add during the ride.

Will the quoted price change between booking and travel?

No. Once your booking is confirmed, your price is locked — it's what you pay regardless of demand, season or currency changes between today and your travel date. Booking early is the surest way to secure today's rate.

Will I pay anything to the driver on arrival?

No. Your fare is paid in full at booking and covers everything the driver's owed — tips, tolls, fuel, taxes, parking. Bookings are pre-paid via credit card, debit card, or PayPal on the hoppa platform. The only reasons your final charge could differ from the quote are changes you make on the day (extra stops, route changes) or fees for damage or smoking, which are disclosed in our terms.

Are there night-time or holiday surcharges?

Some services include a night-time fee for travel between 22:00 and 08:00, and prices may adjust on local holidays. Both are always reflected in the quote you see before paying — there's nothing additional charged at the trip itself.

Can I tip the driver?

Tipping is entirely at your discretion. The driver's service fee is already included in your fare, so a tip is appreciated but never expected.

Do prices change for larger group sizes?

Rates are set per vehicle category, not per person. Moving up to a larger vehicle to fit a bigger party or extra baggage is reflected in the fixed quote you see at booking.

I think I was overcharged

Disputes must be raised within 14 days of the charge date by emailing customer service with your card statement and a brief explanation. After 14 days, charges are considered final.

Which vehicle fits my group?

How many people and how much luggage fit in each vehicle?

Vehicle categories include Sedan, Business Sedan, Minivan, Business Minivan, Minibus and Bus. Each has a strict insured maximum for passengers and luggage that drivers must adhere to. Default luggage allowance is one 24-inch suitcase per passenger — bags larger than 24″ count as two pieces. Choose a category that fits both your party and your bags.

Will I get the exact car shown in the picture?

Vehicle images are for illustration only. You're booking a category, not a specific model — and we may upgrade you to a higher category at no extra charge if your selected one isn't available.

Shared shuttle vs private transfer — what's the difference?

Private transfers take you directly from your pickup point to your accommodation, with no shared passengers and no extra stops. Shared shuttles are budget-friendly and pick up multiple passengers on a planned route, so the journey may take longer but the per-person price is lower.

Can I add a child seat for my baby or toddler?

Yes. We offer infant carriers, baby seats and boosters depending on your supplier and route. Add the seat type you need during booking so it can be confirmed in advance.

How much does a child seat cost?

The first child seat in your booking is included free. Any additional seats may carry a fee from the supplier — the exact amount is shown in your booking quote before you pay, so there are no surprises.

I forgot to request a child seat — can I add it after booking?

Yes. Contact customer service as soon as possible to add it to your booking. Late requests are honoured subject to availability, so the sooner you ask, the better. Important: no refund or replacement applies if a driver arrives without a seat that wasn't requested in time.

Is my child seat guaranteed once I've added it to my booking?

If you've added the seat at the time of booking, it's confirmed with your transport supplier. Seats requested after the booking is placed are subject to availability. If a seat ends up unavailable on arrival because it wasn't requested in time, no refund applies.

Can I bring a pet or service animal?

Yes, at no extra charge. Notify us at booking so the right vehicle is allocated. Important: animals count toward the vehicle's passenger capacity — so a 5-seat vehicle with two pets has three human seats.

Do you have wheelchair-accessible options?

Yes. Note any accessibility need (wheelchair, mobility scooter, special assistance) in the booking comments. We work with specialised partners and make reasonable efforts to accommodate.

What if my flight is delayed?

Will my driver wait if my flight is late?

Yes. Your driver waits up to 60 minutes free after your scheduled arrival for airport pickups. For international flights, there's also a 30-minute buffer added on top — so your driver's free waiting period starts after that buffer ends.

What if my flight is delayed by more than 2 hours?

Contact customer service to reschedule. If we can't pick you up at the new time, the order is cancelled without charge.

What if my flight is cancelled entirely?

Your transfer is cancelled free of charge. Contact customer service immediately so we can update the booking.

What if my flight is diverted to a different airport?

Contact us immediately. We'll do our best to reschedule your pickup — though we can't guarantee a free transfer if the new airport is in a different region or significantly further from your destination.

Where will I meet my driver?

24 hours before pickup we send a final SMS or WhatsApp with the exact meeting point and your driver's contact details. Meet & greet at the arrival gate is available on request, subject to airport policy — if not possible at the gate, we'll assign an alternative meeting point.

What if I'm stuck inside the airport (luggage, immigration)?

Use the emergency number on your e-ticket to call the driver or local supplier and let them know you're still in the terminal. The driver will wait through their free period and, if reached in time, can sometimes extend.

What counts as a no-show?

Not appearing within the free waiting period and being unreachable for additional time. No-shows are charged in full and non-refundable.

Best price & current deals

Where can I find a discount code?

Active offers are applied automatically when you search — there's nothing to enter manually. To see what's currently running, check our discount codes page or our homepage banner.

Should I book early?

Yes. We recommend booking at least 24 hours in advance for the best vehicle selection. Bookings within 24 hours are subject to availability and may carry an expedited service fee. Booking early also locks in today's price.

Is there a low-deposit option?

On selected services and destinations, yes — pay a deposit now and the balance before your travel date. If the balance isn't paid in time the booking auto-cancels and the deposit is forfeited. Note: low-deposit bookings can't be paid with hoppa Credits.

What is Refund Protect?

An optional add-on at checkout from our partner Refund Protect. If you (or anyone in your party) can't attend for a covered reason, you receive 100% of your booking back. Refund Protect's decision is final — see their full terms when adding the option.

Can I use hoppa Credits from a previous booking?

Yes. hoppa Credits apply automatically to your next booking when you log in with the same email. They expire 12 months after issue, can't be transferred between accounts, and can't be combined with low-deposit bookings.

Can I cancel and get a refund?

Yes, depending on timing and vehicle size. Up to 7 seats: free cancellation more than 24 hours before pickup; 100% charge within 24 hours. 8–14 seats: free outside 48 hours. 16+ seats: free outside 14 days, 50% within 14–7 days, 100% within 7 days. Approved refunds process within 14 days to your original payment method.

Why hoppa? Trust & comparison

Who is hoppa exactly?

In one place, you can instantly compare and book with real-time access to the best fares and optimal routes for every journey and every budget. Our network of 70,000+ vetted local fleet providers delivers reliable, fixed-price travel for every need.

Trusted by the world's leading payment networks and super apps — including Mastercard, UnionPay and Alipay — to power their global mobility ecosystems and agentic travel transactions.

Why pre-book instead of grabbing a taxi at arrivals?

Fixed price quoted upfront (no meter, no surprise tolls), driver waits up to 60 minutes free if your flight's late, meet & greet on request, child seats and accessibility bookable in advance, 24/7 multilingual support, and a clear cancellation policy if plans change.

Aren't I just paying a middleman fee?

Your payment covers both our booking service and the supplier's fare — we pay the supplier on your behalf. That's what gives you a fixed all-in price, dispute resolution, and a single point of contact if anything goes wrong on the trip.

Are the drivers vetted and licensed?

We only work with established local transport partners who meet our service and safety standards, and who operate under their own local licensing and insurance requirements. Each supplier is contracted directly by hoppa.

Is my booking and payment secure?

Yes. Payments are processed through industry-standard encryption and secure payment gateways. Your booking details and personal information are protected throughout the transaction.

Can I read verified reviews?

Yes — thousands of travellers share their journey feedback on our website and on Trustpilot, so you can see real experiences from past passengers before you book.

What if something goes wrong on the day?

24/7 phone support is available in English, Spanish and Chinese; chat support runs in all languages. Emergency contact numbers are on your e-ticket so you can reach support or the local supplier directly.

How do I complain after the trip?

For pre-booked transfers and shared shuttles, raise complaints within 30 days of the trip. For ride-hailing, within 3 days. Email customer service with your booking reference.

Already booked? Login & manage

Where's my e-ticket and pickup time?

A confirmation email goes out immediately after booking, a reminder 7 days before, and final pickup details by SMS or WhatsApp 24 hours before. Everything is also visible in My Bookings when you log in.

Can I get a VAT invoice for expenses?

Yes — contact customer service within 30 days of your trip to issue an invoice.

I left something in the car

Contact customer service as soon as possible. We'll make reasonable efforts to recover and return your item, but we can't guarantee retrieval and don't accept liability for items left behind.

Smoking, damage and cleaning fees

Smoking or vaping in any vehicle triggers a minimum $250 cleaning fee and the driver may end the trip; the fare becomes non-refundable. Trash, spills or other damage in the vehicle can incur a cleaning fee of up to $200.

What are hoppa Credits?

Credit issued on refunds or as a goodwill gesture. They apply automatically to your next booking when you log in with the same email, expire 12 months after issue, can't be transferred, and can't be combined with low-deposit bookings.

How do I cancel my booking? Can I get a refund?

Cancel from your account or by contacting support. Refund depends on timing and vehicle size: up to 7 seats — free outside 24 hours, 100% charge within 24 hours. 8–14 seats — free outside 48 hours. 16+ seats — free outside 14 days, 50% within 14–7 days, 100% within 7 days.

Can I change my booking details?

Yes, but only for: passenger names, contact numbers, number of passengers, and luggage count (within the booked vehicle's capacity). One free modification is allowed if your booking is eligible. For other changes — including route, vehicle category or pickup point — you'll need to cancel and rebook at the current price.

How long do refunds take to process?

Approved refunds are processed within 14 days to your original payment method.

How much is a transfer from Dulles to downtown DC?

  • A pre-booked hoppa private car from IAD to the Monumental Core starts from $79 fixed, all-in, including the Dulles Toll Road and the Dulles Greenway toll.
  • A metered Washington Flyer Taxi to the same address typically lands between $80 and $95 once you add the $4.50 to $7.00 toll surcharge, the 10% airport access fee, and a tip and that is before peak surge during congressional weeks.
  • The fixed-price difference is not the dollars. It is knowing the number before you board your flight.

How long is the transfer from Dulles Airport to Washington DC?

IAD sits 26 miles north-west of the National Mall, which is a different category of transfer from DCA's 4-mile river crossing or BWI's 32-mile northern run. The default route is the Dulles Toll Road (Route 267) to I-66 or the Capital Beltway, and the journey doubles between 16:00 and 19:00 on weekdays when DC commuter traffic stacks the eastbound lanes.

First-time arrivals are routinely caught by two things: that the airport is genuinely far, and that the toll structure is layered (Dulles Toll Road, Greenway, sometimes I-66 Express Lanes) so quoted fares without the toll line included are not the price you actually pay.

Destination from IAD Private drive time Shared (pp) Private car (1–3) Recommended vehicle
Washington DC (Monumental Core, Capitol Hill, K Street) 35–75 min from $24 from $79 Sedan — Toll Road included, door 2 pickup
Washington DC (Georgetown, Foggy Bottom) 35–70 min from $26 from $79 Sedan — M Street final mile is the slow bit
Arlington (Pentagon City, Crystal City, Rosslyn) 30–60 min from $22 from $69 Sedan — skips the river crossing
Tysons Corner (Silver Line endpoint, business hotels) 20–35 min from $18 from $59 Sedan — closest major business cluster
Reston / Herndon (tech corridor) 10–20 min from $14 from $49 Sedan — shortest paid run from IAD
Northern Virginia hotels (Fairfax, Falls Church) 15–35 min from $16 from $55 Sedan or van depending on group size

Which Dulles airport transportation is right for you?

The right Dulles vehicle is the one matched to your group size and your DC plans, not the box with the lowest number on the page. Get the vehicle wrong and you arrive in Washington with a four-person family stuffed into a sedan and the luggage on someone's lap, or you book a coach when a sedan would do. Pickup at IAD happens at door 2 arrivals, not the rideshare zone at door 4, so the vehicle assigned to you needs to fit the lane it pulls up in.

The table below maps real situations to the right vehicle.

Your travel style Recommended service Why it works at IAD
Solo business traveller to a DC or Tysons hotel Private car (sedan) Door 2 pickup, named driver, e-receipt for expensing — bypasses the Silver Line walk and the Washington Flyer Taxi meter.
Couple or small family to DC Private car (up to 5 seats) Fits two adults plus two children with luggage. First child seat is free if requested at booking.
Family or small group (4–6) to DC, Arlington or Tysons Private minivan Holds the bags a sedan cannot — Dulles is a long-haul US gateway, so oversized luggage is normal.
Government or congressional traveller Executive sedan or SUV Vetted operators verified for licensing and insurance, congressional-week timing built in, VAT-line receipt.
Convention or conference group (7–20+) Private minibus or coach Single drop at the venue, no Metro changes, predictable arrival across the Beltway.
Budget traveller, light luggage Shared shuttle Lower per-person price than the cab rank, fixed seat, no haggling at door 2.
Traveller with mobility needs Wheelchair-accessible minibus Pre-book — the right vehicle waits at door 2, not the rideshare lottery at door 4.

A few things worth knowing before you book:

  • The first child seat is free for any vehicle, and it must be requested at the booking stage. Without the booking note the driver may refuse the ride with no refund given, so it is worth doing the moment you confirm.
  • The nighttime surcharge window runs from 22:00 to 08:00 local time, which catches red-eye arrivals from the West Coast.
  • Luggage is 24 inches standard; anything over that counts as two pieces, which matters if you are flying in for a Smithsonian conference with display crates.
  • Pets and service animals are permitted and count toward the vehicle's passenger seat allowance.
  • Any promo code you hold is applied before you pay.

What happens if something goes wrong at Dulles?

Picture this. You are on a long-haul flight diverted from Concourse D to a remote stand because a Presidential motorcade has temporarily closed taxiway access. Customs queues stack up, your phone is at 6%, and your driver is somewhere out there at door 2.

  • Every hoppa Dulles operator tracks your actual landing through the FAA feed, not your scheduled landing, so they already know about the diversion before you have cleared immigration.
  • You have 60 minutes free wait time after wheels-down per the hoppa Service Agreement, plus a 30-minute international buffer for Concourse D customs queues.
  • Your terminal change is covered. Your driver name and vehicle plate are in your inbox before you board your outbound flight.
  • If you cannot see your driver, call the number on your e-ticket. hoppa's team picks up in an average of 11 seconds with a 99.7% call answer rate, every hour, every day, not a chatbot, not a ticket queue, a person. Industry standard sits at over 20 seconds and a 95% answer rate, so the difference matters most when you are standing at door 2 with a four-hour-old toddler asking where the car is.

For government, embassy, and congressional travel, hoppa's 70,000+ vetted local operators run the secure-perimeter and named-driver protocols that a last-minute ride-hail cannot offer. Executive sedans and SUVs come with a vetted driver verified for licensing and insurance, a printed receipt for expense reports, and the option to specify Toll Road routing in advance during congressional vote weeks.

Is hoppa cheaper than a Washington Flyer Taxi from Dulles?

The honest answer depends on what you mean by cheaper.

  • Washington Flyer Taxi is the official IAD concession, metered, with a $4.50 to $7.00 toll added on top, an airport access fee, and surge during congressional weeks.
  • The Silver Line Metro extension to IAD opened in November 2022 at $6 one-way, which beats every car-based option on price but adds 55–65 minutes of train time, a 5–8 minute walk via the AeroTrain from the Main Terminal, and zero luggage handling.
  • Pre-booked hoppa quotes a single fixed number that already includes the Dulles Toll Road and Greenway, so the price you see is the price you pay even if the Beltway closes a lane.
Transport option Indicative price to Washington DC Journey time What is included / what to watch for
hoppa pre-booked transfer from $79 private / $24pp shared 35–75 min Fixed price, Dulles Toll Road included, named driver, 60-min free wait. No surge.
Silver Line Metro $6 55–65 min + platform walk Opened Nov 2022, change at Metro Center for the core, no luggage rack.
Uber / Lyft $65–95 35–75 min IAD airport fee added, surge on congressional weeks, pickup at door 4, app needs data on landing.
Washington Flyer Taxi metered $80–95 + toll 35–75 min Meter runs in traffic, Dulles Toll Road toll $4.50–7.00 extra, no flight tracking.

Watch the hidden cost.

  • The Dulles Toll Road, the Dulles Greenway, and the I-66 Express Lanes all carry separate dynamic tolls that metered drivers itemise on the meter after the fare.
  • A fixed price from hoppa absorbs all of them — Toll Road, Greenway, airport access fee, and any Express Lane pricing on the eastbound run.

Washington Dulles terminal guide & tips

When you exit baggage reclaim at IAD, walk to door 2 on the arrivals (ground) level, that is where your hoppa driver is waiting with a sign. Do not head for door 4. Door 4 is the ride-share zone and pre-booked transfers do not pick up there. Concourse D international arrivals: clear customs first, then take the AeroTrain (free, four-minute headway, four-minute ride) back to the Main Terminal and follow the signs for ground transportation.

The full arrivals, delays and travel detail sits in the guide below.

Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) — Where to go when you land

Where your hoppa driver waits, how the door 2 versus Silver Line choice actually works, and what to do once you reach the capital

Arrivals

IAD runs one Main Terminal feeding four concourses (A, B, C and D), linked by the underground AeroTrain. International flights arrive into Concourse D and clear customs in the Main Terminal before you reach the arrivals level. Domestic flights land at concourses A through C and feed the same arrivals level. Everything funnels to the same baggage claim and the same set of exit doors.

Where to meet your driver

Your hoppa driver waits at door 2 on the Main Terminal arrivals level, holding a sign with your name. Your e-ticket confirms the exact spot. International arrivals ride the AeroTrain in from Concourse D, then come down to the same arrivals level as everyone else.

Skip the door 4 rideshare lot

Uber and Lyft pickups are pushed out to door 4 and the rideshare staging area, away from the terminal doors. Do not head there for a pre-booked transfer — your hoppa car is waiting at door 2, not in the rideshare lottery.

Delays & Driver Info

1

Free waiting time

60 minutes after your scheduled landing for domestic arrivals, plus a 30-minute buffer for international arrivals into Concourse D to cover the customs queue and the AeroTrain ride to the Main Terminal.

Flight delayed or diverted?

Your driver tracks the flight in real time, so they already know. Real-time tracking covers weather diversions to BWI or DCA and holds during congressional-week congestion. If your inbound slips, the driver simply adjusts — no extra charge inside the free wait.

?

Can’t see your driver?

Head to door 2 on the arrivals level first. Then call the number on your e-ticket — hoppa’s team answers in an average of 11 seconds, 24/7, a real person, not a chatbot.

General Travel Information

$

Currency & tipping

US dollars. Tipping is not required but 18–20% is customary for ground transport; the fixed hoppa fare is complete on its own.

T

Peak traffic

The Dulles Toll Road and I-66 into DC stall 06:30–09:30 and 15:30–19:00 weekdays, and worse during congressional weeks. Both windows can add 25–35 minutes on the run to the Monumental Core.

!

Taxi warning

The Washington Flyer Taxi rank is metered — expect $80–95 to DC with the Dulles Toll Road toll of $4.50–7.00 added on top, and the meter keeps running in traffic. A hoppa fixed price includes the toll and does not move.

S

Silver Line Metro

The Silver Line reached IAD in November 2022 — $6, and a fair option for solo travellers with light luggage. Budget 55–65 minutes to downtown with a change at Metro Center, plus the platform walk from the terminal.

What to do when you reach the city

The National Mall

The Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument and the Smithsonian museums, around 45 minutes from the airport — the monumental heart of the capital, and most museums are free.

Georgetown

Cobbled streets, the C&O Canal and the waterfront, about 40 minutes from IAD — DC’s oldest neighbourhood for shopping and dinner along M Street.

Capitol Hill & the museums

The US Capitol, the Library of Congress and the Supreme Court cluster at the east end of the Mall, roughly 50 minutes from Dulles depending on traffic.

Arrive happy in Washington Dulles with hoppa

The Capitol dome is twenty-six miles east, the Toll Road already on us, and your driver knows the lane logic before the seatbelt sign comes off. Whether you are landing for a congressional vote week, a Smithsonian morning, or a tech-corridor meeting in Reston, the price is locked and the kerb is door 2. Lock your Washington Dulles transfer rate.

Plans change fast on a congressional-week trip. Get 20% off your first ride via the hoppa app — your booking, your driver details, and your fixed price all in one place before you reach the kerb.

Frequently asked questions

Where exactly does my hoppa driver meet me at Dulles?

Door 2 on the Main Terminal arrivals (ground) level — not door 4, which is the ride-share zone, and not the Washington Flyer Taxi rank at door 2 west. Your driver is on the kerb with a sign showing your name before you exit baggage reclaim.

Which terminal is which at Dulles?

Dulles has one Main Terminal where all check-in and arrivals happen, plus four concourses (A, B, C, D) reached via the underground AeroTrain. International flights arrive at Concourse D — clear customs and immigration there, then take the AeroTrain back to the Main Terminal for pickup.

Does the price include the Dulles Toll Road and Greenway?

Yes. Every hoppa Dulles fixed-price transfer includes the Dulles Toll Road, the Dulles Greenway, the airport access fee, and any I-66 or Beltway Express Lane toll on the eastbound run.

Are child seats included?

The first child seat is free for any vehicle and must be requested at booking. Without a booking note the driver may refuse the ride with no refund given, so add it the moment you confirm your vehicle.

What is the luggage allowance?

One bag per person at the 24-inch standard. Anything over 24 inches counts as two pieces, which matters on long-haul Dulles arrivals with oversized cases. Flag extra or oversized bags at booking and you will be matched to a larger vehicle.

Is there a nighttime surcharge?

Yes — 22:00 to 08:00 local time. West Coast red-eye arrivals into Concourse C frequently land inside this window, and the surcharge is already inside your fixed price the moment you book a night pickup.

What if I need to cancel?

Private cars and vehicles up to 7 seats can cancel more than 24 hours before travel for a full refund. 8–14 seat vehicles need more than 48 hours; coaches of 16 or more need more than 14 days. The refundable upgrade extends cancellation to within hours of travel.

How far ahead should I book?

At least 24 hours before travel — bookings inside 24 hours carry an expedited fee. Congressional weeks (Monday arrivals 06:00–10:00) and Thursday evening departures (17:00–20:00) sell out earliest, so book as soon as flights are ticketed.
