Ellmau

Ellmau is a charming and popular ski resort located on the northern side of the expansive SkiWelt area. While Söll may be more famous among skiers, and Brixen and Hopfgarten are well-known in non-English-speaking countries, Ellmau has built a reputation as a favorite destination for families.

Set in a picturesque location just off the main road between St. Johann and Wörgl, Ellmau offers excellent ski access to neighboring areas like Brixen and Scheffau. The village also has a variety of runs both above Ellmau and in the nearby village of Going.

With a history dating back to the 12th century, Ellmau began as a farming settlement and played a significant role in the region’s past, from being fought over by Napoleon’s invading troops to serving as a key stop on the postal route between Innsbruck and Salzburg.

Today, Ellmau is a thriving resort offering stunning views of the Wilder Kaiser mountains and access to Austria’s largest interconnected ski area. The village has evolved from offering mainly guesthouse and private room accommodations to now also featuring luxury options, including one of the few five-star hotels in the region.

The ski slopes begin at the edge of the village, with the impressive Hartkaiser mountain tram providing access to the heart of the SkiWelt area or, alternatively, to the smaller ski zone above Going.

Ellmau is conveniently located between Innsbruck airport and Salzburg airport, with access to the motorway network just 25 minutes away via the Inn Valley route.
