Baltimore/Washington International Airport (BWI) Transportation Private Cars, Shuttles & Transfers to Washington DC & Downtown Baltimore

Arrive happy with Baltimore Washington airport transfers & rides

You have landed at BWI, but your real destination is one of two very different places: downtown Baltimore twenty minutes north, or Washington DC the better part of an hour south. That single fork trips up first-time arrivals, who reach the ground-transport level and realise the train, the shuttle and the rideshare queue all point different ways. hoppa fixes it before you fly: one price locked at booking, a named driver who already knows your destination, and a car tracking your flight so it waits when you land late. More than 40 million travellers have arrived this way, carried by vetted local operators trusted by Mastercard, UnionPay and Alipay.

Shared from $22pp · Private car from $69 · Minivan from $89. Journey time is around 20 min to downtown Baltimore and 50 min to Washington DC. Prices are indicative. Check hoppa.com for live availability.

Everything you need to know before you book

Pick a topic to see the most common questions travelers ask at this airport — fixed prices, vehicles, delays, deals, trust, and managing your booking.

What does it cost to my resort?

What's the price from the airport to my resort?

Prices vary by route, vehicle, season, and time of day. Enter your dates and party size above to see your fixed quoted price for the exact journey.

What's included in my fixed price?

Your quoted price covers vehicle hire, fuel, the driver's service fee (tips), tolls, parking, taxes, and any entry, congestion or airport-access fees on the route. There's nothing extra to pay the driver on arrival.

What's NOT included — what could cost extra?

Charged separately and disclosed before they apply: overtime fees if your trip runs longer than reserved, excess-mileage fees if you exceed your booked distance, night-time service fees on some routes (22:00–08:00), holiday or event surcharges in some regions, additional child seats beyond the first one (which is free), and extra stops you add during the ride.

Will the quoted price change between booking and travel?

No. Once your booking is confirmed, your price is locked — it's what you pay regardless of demand, season or currency changes between today and your travel date. Booking early is the surest way to secure today's rate.

Will I pay anything to the driver on arrival?

No. Your fare is paid in full at booking and covers everything the driver's owed — tips, tolls, fuel, taxes, parking. Bookings are pre-paid via credit card, debit card, or PayPal on the hoppa platform. The only reasons your final charge could differ from the quote are changes you make on the day (extra stops, route changes) or fees for damage or smoking, which are disclosed in our terms.

Are there night-time or holiday surcharges?

Some services include a night-time fee for travel between 22:00 and 08:00, and prices may adjust on local holidays. Both are always reflected in the quote you see before paying — there's nothing additional charged at the trip itself.

Can I tip the driver?

Tipping is entirely at your discretion. The driver's service fee is already included in your fare, so a tip is appreciated but never expected.

Do prices change for larger group sizes?

Rates are set per vehicle category, not per person. Moving up to a larger vehicle to fit a bigger party or extra baggage is reflected in the fixed quote you see at booking.

I think I was overcharged

Disputes must be raised within 14 days of the charge date by emailing customer service with your card statement and a brief explanation. After 14 days, charges are considered final.

Which vehicle fits my group?

How many people and how much luggage fit in each vehicle?

Vehicle categories include Sedan, Business Sedan, Minivan, Business Minivan, Minibus and Bus. Each has a strict insured maximum for passengers and luggage that drivers must adhere to. Default luggage allowance is one 24-inch suitcase per passenger — bags larger than 24″ count as two pieces. Choose a category that fits both your party and your bags.

Will I get the exact car shown in the picture?

Vehicle images are for illustration only. You're booking a category, not a specific model — and we may upgrade you to a higher category at no extra charge if your selected one isn't available.

Shared shuttle vs private transfer — what's the difference?

Private transfers take you directly from your pickup point to your accommodation, with no shared passengers and no extra stops. Shared shuttles are budget-friendly and pick up multiple passengers on a planned route, so the journey may take longer but the per-person price is lower.

Can I add a child seat for my baby or toddler?

Yes. We offer infant carriers, baby seats and boosters depending on your supplier and route. Add the seat type you need during booking so it can be confirmed in advance.

How much does a child seat cost?

The first child seat in your booking is included free. Any additional seats may carry a fee from the supplier — the exact amount is shown in your booking quote before you pay, so there are no surprises.

I forgot to request a child seat — can I add it after booking?

Yes. Contact customer service as soon as possible to add it to your booking. Late requests are honoured subject to availability, so the sooner you ask, the better. Important: no refund or replacement applies if a driver arrives without a seat that wasn't requested in time.

Is my child seat guaranteed once I've added it to my booking?

If you've added the seat at the time of booking, it's confirmed with your transport supplier. Seats requested after the booking is placed are subject to availability. If a seat ends up unavailable on arrival because it wasn't requested in time, no refund applies.

Can I bring a pet or service animal?

Yes, at no extra charge. Notify us at booking so the right vehicle is allocated. Important: animals count toward the vehicle's passenger capacity — so a 5-seat vehicle with two pets has three human seats.

Do you have wheelchair-accessible options?

Yes. Note any accessibility need (wheelchair, mobility scooter, special assistance) in the booking comments. We work with specialised partners and make reasonable efforts to accommodate.

What if my flight is delayed?

Will my driver wait if my flight is late?

Yes. Your driver waits up to 60 minutes free after your scheduled arrival for airport pickups. For international flights, there's also a 30-minute buffer added on top — so your driver's free waiting period starts after that buffer ends.

What if my flight is delayed by more than 2 hours?

Contact customer service to reschedule. If we can't pick you up at the new time, the order is cancelled without charge.

What if my flight is cancelled entirely?

Your transfer is cancelled free of charge. Contact customer service immediately so we can update the booking.

What if my flight is diverted to a different airport?

Contact us immediately. We'll do our best to reschedule your pickup — though we can't guarantee a free transfer if the new airport is in a different region or significantly further from your destination.

Where will I meet my driver?

24 hours before pickup we send a final SMS or WhatsApp with the exact meeting point and your driver's contact details. Meet & greet at the arrival gate is available on request, subject to airport policy — if not possible at the gate, we'll assign an alternative meeting point.

What if I'm stuck inside the airport (luggage, immigration)?

Use the emergency number on your e-ticket to call the driver or local supplier and let them know you're still in the terminal. The driver will wait through their free period and, if reached in time, can sometimes extend.

What counts as a no-show?

Not appearing within the free waiting period and being unreachable for additional time. No-shows are charged in full and non-refundable.

Best price & current deals

Where can I find a discount code?

Active offers are applied automatically when you search — there's nothing to enter manually. To see what's currently running, check our discount codes page or our homepage banner.

Should I book early?

Yes. We recommend booking at least 24 hours in advance for the best vehicle selection. Bookings within 24 hours are subject to availability and may carry an expedited service fee. Booking early also locks in today's price.

Is there a low-deposit option?

On selected services and destinations, yes — pay a deposit now and the balance before your travel date. If the balance isn't paid in time the booking auto-cancels and the deposit is forfeited. Note: low-deposit bookings can't be paid with hoppa Credits.

What is Refund Protect?

An optional add-on at checkout from our partner Refund Protect. If you (or anyone in your party) can't attend for a covered reason, you receive 100% of your booking back. Refund Protect's decision is final — see their full terms when adding the option.

Can I use hoppa Credits from a previous booking?

Yes. hoppa Credits apply automatically to your next booking when you log in with the same email. They expire 12 months after issue, can't be transferred between accounts, and can't be combined with low-deposit bookings.

Can I cancel and get a refund?

Yes, depending on timing and vehicle size. Up to 7 seats: free cancellation more than 24 hours before pickup; 100% charge within 24 hours. 8–14 seats: free outside 48 hours. 16+ seats: free outside 14 days, 50% within 14–7 days, 100% within 7 days. Approved refunds process within 14 days to your original payment method.

Why hoppa? Trust & comparison

Trusted by the world's leading payment networks and super apps — including Mastercard, UnionPay and Alipay — to power their global mobility ecosystems and agentic travel transactions.

Why pre-book instead of grabbing a taxi at arrivals?

Fixed price quoted upfront (no meter, no surprise tolls), driver waits up to 60 minutes free if your flight's late, meet & greet on request, child seats and accessibility bookable in advance, 24/7 multilingual support, and a clear cancellation policy if plans change.

Aren't I just paying a middleman fee?

Your payment covers both our booking service and the supplier's fare — we pay the supplier on your behalf. That's what gives you a fixed all-in price, dispute resolution, and a single point of contact if anything goes wrong on the trip.

Are the drivers vetted and licensed?

We only work with established local transport partners who meet our service and safety standards, and who operate under their own local licensing and insurance requirements. Each supplier is contracted directly by hoppa.

Is my booking and payment secure?

Yes. Payments are processed through industry-standard encryption and secure payment gateways. Your booking details and personal information are protected throughout the transaction.

Can I read verified reviews?

Yes — thousands of travellers share their journey feedback on our website and on Trustpilot, so you can see real experiences from past passengers before you book.

What if something goes wrong on the day?

24/7 phone support is available in English, Spanish and Chinese; chat support runs in all languages. Emergency contact numbers are on your e-ticket so you can reach support or the local supplier directly.

How do I complain after the trip?

For pre-booked transfers and shared shuttles, raise complaints within 30 days of the trip. For ride-hailing, within 3 days. Email customer service with your booking reference.

Already booked? Login & manage

Where's my e-ticket and pickup time?

A confirmation email goes out immediately after booking, a reminder 7 days before, and final pickup details by SMS or WhatsApp 24 hours before. Everything is also visible in My Bookings when you log in.

Can I get a VAT invoice for expenses?

Yes — contact customer service within 30 days of your trip to issue an invoice.

I left something in the car

Contact customer service as soon as possible. We'll make reasonable efforts to recover and return your item, but we can't guarantee retrieval and don't accept liability for items left behind.

Smoking, damage and cleaning fees

Smoking or vaping in any vehicle triggers a minimum $250 cleaning fee and the driver may end the trip; the fare becomes non-refundable. Trash, spills or other damage in the vehicle can incur a cleaning fee of up to $200.

What are hoppa Credits?

Credit issued on refunds or as a goodwill gesture. They apply automatically to your next booking when you log in with the same email, expire 12 months after issue, can't be transferred, and can't be combined with low-deposit bookings.

How do I cancel my booking? Can I get a refund?

Cancel from your account or by contacting support. Refund depends on timing and vehicle size: up to 7 seats — free outside 24 hours, 100% charge within 24 hours. 8–14 seats — free outside 48 hours. 16+ seats — free outside 14 days, 50% within 14–7 days, 100% within 7 days.

Can I change my booking details?

Yes, but only for: passenger names, contact numbers, number of passengers, and luggage count (within the booked vehicle's capacity). One free modification is allowed if your booking is eligible. For other changes — including route, vehicle category or pickup point — you'll need to cancel and rebook at the current price.

How long do refunds take to process?

Approved refunds are processed within 14 days to your original payment method.

How do I get from BWI to Washington DC or downtown Baltimore?

The question almost everyone ask first is how to get from BWI to Washington DC, and the honest answer is that it depends on your day.

The MARC Penn Line train is cheap at around $8 to Union Station, but it runs a thin weekday schedule and does not keep a full timetable at weekends, so a Sunday arrival can find the platform quiet and the plan broken.

A pre-booked transfer removes the guesswork: your driver meets you on the Lower Level, loads the bags, and drives straight down the Baltimore-Washington Parkway to your DC hotel door for a price you already know.

How long is the transfer from Baltimore/Washington Airport to Washington DC and Downtown Baltimore?

BWI is the only airport in the region that genuinely serves two cities, and the journey splits sharply depending on which way you turn out of the terminal.

  • Head north and you are in downtown Baltimore and the Inner Harbor in about twenty minutes. Head south on the I-295 Baltimore-Washington Parkway or the I-95 and Washington DC is a forty-five to sixty minute drive, longer when the Beltway snarls at rush hour.
  • First-timers underestimate the DC leg and overestimate the Baltimore one, so the table below sets the honest times for both.
  • If your flights land you the other side of the capital instead, hoppa also covers transfers from Washington Dulles.

Which BWI transportation is right for you?

The right vehicle at BWI depends less on group size than on where you are going. Pick a shared shuttle for a solo hop into Baltimore and it works well, but choose the same shuttle for a family with a week of luggage heading to a DC hotel and you will spend the drive squeezed with strangers on a route that stops several times.

Match the vehicle to the journey and the choice looks after itself.

Your travel styleRecommended serviceWhy it works
Solo or budget, into BaltimoreShared shuttleSplits the short Inner Harbor run across passengers; lowest per-person fare north
Couple or friends, either cityPrivate carDoor to door with no shared stops; fixed price covers the full DC or Baltimore run
Family with luggage to DCPrivate minibusRoom for bags and child seats on the long southbound Parkway leg, no squeezing
Business traveller to downtown DCPrivate car (executive)Quiet ride, English-speaking driver, expense-ready receipt for the Union Station corridor
Wedding or event groupPrivate coachKeeps a party of up to 60 together for Annapolis or Baltimore harbour venues
Travelling with mobility needsWheelchair-accessible minibusRamp-equipped vehicle booked for the door, no transfers between train and bus

A few things worth knowing before you book:

  • The first child seat is free, but you must add it at booking so it is fitted and ready when your driver pulls up at the kerb; request it the moment you confirm your vehicle, because a seat cannot be conjured on arrival.
  • Journeys between 22:00 and 08:00 carry a nighttime surcharge, which is already inside the price you see.
  • Standard luggage is measured to 24 inches, and anything larger counts as two pieces, so flag oversized bags or sports gear at booking.
  • The refundable upgrade lets you cancel closer to travel if your plans are still moving.

What happens if something goes wrong?

Picture a delayed Southwest flight landing at BWI near midnight, the Departures Level rideshare queue thin, and your phone at four percent. This is the exact moment a pre-booked transfer earns its place.

  • Your driver has tracked your flight the whole way down, so the later landing is already accounted for, and the car is waiting on the Lower Level whether you land early or two hours late.
  • hoppa builds in real-time flight tracking on every booking, so a diverted or delayed arrival does not leave you stranded.
  • If your terminal gate or reclaim carousel changes, your driver adjusts. You get 60 minutes of free waiting time after your scheduled landing, with a 30-minute buffer added for international arrivals, which covers the immigration and baggage queues that catch travellers out.
  • Your driver is named on your e-ticket and holds a board with your name at arrivals, so there is no hunting for an unmarked car.
  • Call the number on your e-ticket if anything looks off. hoppa's team picks up in an average of 11 seconds, not a chatbot, not a ticket queue, a person, available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
  • For business travellers, a VAT-ready receipt, priority support and executive vehicle options make the Union Station corridor run expense-simple.

Is hoppa cheaper than the train or Uber from BWI?

BWI has more public-transport competition than most airports in the United States, and each option has a fair use case. The MARC Penn Line and Amtrak both run from the BWI Rail Station to DC, but that station is a free shuttle-bus ride from the terminal, not a walk, and MARC's cheap fare comes with a weekday-heavy timetable. The MTA Light Rail crawls into downtown Baltimore with many stops. Uber and Lyft work, but their pickup is up on the Departures Level, not the arrivals kerb, and the late-night driver pool thins just when you need it.

Here is the honest comparison to downtown DC.

Transport optionIndicative price to downtown DCJourney timeWhat's included / what to watch for
MARC Penn Line train~$8pp40–55 minLowest fare, but a shuttle ride to the station and thin weekend service
Amtrak$30–$60pp30–40 minFastest by rail, but pricey and irregular from BWI
Uber / Lyft$65–$11045–60 minOn-demand, but surge pricing and pickup on the Departures Level
hoppa private transferfrom $10945–60 minFixed all-in price, driver on the Lower Level tracking your flight, door to door

Watch the hidden cost. The BWI Rail Station shuttle and the MARC weekend gap catch travellers who planned around the cheap train fare, and rideshare surge on a Southwest arrival bank can push an Uber past the price of a fixed private car. With hoppa the number you saw at booking is the number you pay, tolls and nighttime surcharge included.

Baltimore/Washington Airport terminal guide & tips

When you land at BWI, follow the signs down to the Lower Level, where ground transport and pre-booked transfers collect; this is where your hoppa driver waits, not the Departures Level upstairs. BWI runs as a single terminal split into five concourses, A through E, so most arrivals reach the same ground-transport area regardless of gate.

The guide below covers exactly where to go, what to skip, and how to handle a delay.

Baltimore/Washington Airport (BWI)

Where to go when you land at BWI

Arrivals

Head down to the Lower Level ground-transport area after baggage claim; your hoppa driver waits here with a name board. Take the exit marked for ground transportation and pre-arranged pickups, not the taxi rank or the Departures Level rideshare zone.

Pickup point

Your driver holds a printed board with your name on the Lower Level ground-transport area and is expecting your flight. The exit is marked for ground transportation and pre-arranged pickups.

Where not to go

Do not walk to the BWI Rail Station for your transfer — that is for MARC and Amtrak passengers only. Also skip the taxi rank and the Departures Level rideshare zone.

Delays & Driver Info

1

Free waiting time

60 minutes for domestic arrivals and 90 minutes for international arrivals, measured from your scheduled landing time. If your gate or reclaim carousel changes, your driver tracks the update automatically.

If you cannot see your driver

Stay on the Lower Level and do not leave the pickup area. Call the number on your e-ticket — hoppa’s team answers in an average of 11 seconds and can locate your driver quickly.

?

Automatic flight tracking

Your driver watches your flight in real time. Gate changes, baggage-carousel updates, and short delays are handled without any action from you.

General Travel Information

Tipping

Tipping a driver is customary but not required in the US; anything is at your discretion. Gratuity is not included in the hoppa fare unless stated on your e-ticket.

T

Peak traffic

Runs 07:00–09:30 and 16:00–19:00, worst on the DC-bound Baltimore-Washington Parkway and the Capital Beltway (I-495).

!

Avoid unbooked kerbside taxis

Especially during Southwest arrival banks, when queues at the taxi rank spike and waits blow out. Your pre-booked hoppa driver is waiting inside.

B

Honest alternative

The MARC Penn Line is a fair cheap option to DC on weekdays, but check the weekend timetable before relying on it — service is significantly reduced Saturday and Sunday.

What to do near BWI airport?

BWI sits between two capital cities and a historic sailing harbour — if you have time on either side of your flight, the trips are worthwhile.

  • Baltimore Inner Harbor: waterfront dining, the National Aquarium and historic ships, 20 minutes north.
  • Washington DC: the National Mall, Smithsonian museums and the Capitol, an hour south.
  • Annapolis: the Naval Academy and a historic sailing harbour, 40 minutes east.

Frequently asked questions

Where does my hoppa driver meet me at BWI?

Your driver waits on the Lower Level near baggage claim, holding a board with your name. Do not head up to the Departures Level rideshare zone; that is for Uber and Lyft, not your pre-booked transfer.

How far is BWI from Washington DC?

Downtown DC is about 32 miles south, a 45 to 60 minute drive on the Baltimore-Washington Parkway or I-95, longer at Beltway rush hour. Leave outside peak windows and the run is noticeably quicker.

How far is BWI from downtown Baltimore?

The Inner Harbor is about 10 miles north, roughly 20 to 30 minutes depending on the Fort McHenry Tunnel traffic.

Should I take the MARC train or a transfer to DC?

The MARC Penn Line is cheap but runs a thin weekday schedule and does not keep a full weekend timetable, and the BWI Rail Station is a shuttle ride from the terminal. A private transfer is door to door with no station change.

Can I get a transfer to the Maryland suburbs like Bethesda or Annapolis?

Yes. There is no direct transit to Bethesda, Silver Spring, Columbia or Annapolis, so a pre-booked transfer is the clean option straight to your door.

Are child seats available?

The first child seat is free and must be requested at booking so it is fitted and ready at the kerb. A seat cannot be arranged on arrival, so add it when you confirm your vehicle.

Can I bring pets?

Pets and service animals are permitted and count toward your vehicle's passenger allowance, so flag them at booking so the right vehicle is assigned.

What are the luggage limits?

Standard luggage is measured to 24 inches per piece, and anything larger counts as two pieces. Flag oversized bags, golf clubs or sports gear at booking.

Is there a nighttime surcharge?

Journeys between 22:00 and 08:00 local time carry a nighttime surcharge, which is already included in the fixed price you see at booking.

Can I cancel or change my booking?

Cars and vehicles up to 7 seats can be cancelled more than 24 hours before travel for a full refund; 8 to 14 seat vehicles more than 48 hours before; coaches of 16+ more than 14 days before. The refundable upgrade extends cancellation to within a few hours of travel.

How far ahead should I book?

Book as early as you can to lock the fixed price; bookings made within 24 hours of travel carry an expedited booking fee.
