The best cheap summer vacation destinations in the US for 2026
1. Orlando, Florida: The best all-round value for a summer vacation
Orlando may be one of the most familiar vacation spots in the US, but the data shows it can also be one of the best for value. With a budget score of 9.91 out of 10, the city pairs below-average hotel prices with low private airport transfer costs and plenty of budget-friendly attractions.
Three-star hotels average $121 per night, which is well below the US study average of $168.
The city also performs especially well for airport transfers. Private airport transfers start at $28, far below the US average of $100, helping you keep one of the first costs of the trip predictable.
Orlando also has 43.2 budget-friendly attractions per 100,000 people, putting it above the US average of 29.4. If you’re comparing cheap summer travel destinations, this balance gives Orlando a clear advantage: the costs are manageable from arrival, while there’s plenty of affordable things to do.

Where San Antonio stands out is in the everyday costs that can shape a short break. A local draft beer averages $5.25, while a meal at an inexpensive restaurant costs $18. Public transport is also among the lowest in the US top 10, with an average one-way fare of $1.30.

It has the highest budget-friendly attraction density of any destination in the US top 10 (by far), with 129.3 per 100,000 people, making it especially appealing for a break built around sightseeing or taking the city at a slower pace.
Hotels average $159 per night, so Savannah is more expensive for accommodation than Orlando or San Antonio. However, it still sits below the US study average of $168, while inexpensive restaurant meals average $20.

Mexico’s cheapest 2026 summer destinations
When travelers picture a vacation in Mexico, popular destinations like Cabo or Puerto Vallarta often come to mind. However, looking beyond the country’s best-known coastal resorts could help your summer vacation budget stretch further.
1. Oaxaca City, Oaxaca: The best-value Mexican destination for 2026
At the top of Mexico’s ranking is Oaxaca City, where the strongest value comes through the everyday costs of the trip. With a budget score of 9.17 out of 10, the city does cheap food, drink, and local transport well, giving you more room for long lunches and unhurried time exploring once they arrive.
A local draft beer averages $2.17, the lowest price recorded across the Mexico destinations analyzed. A meal at an inexpensive restaurant costs $9.43, while a one-way public transport fare averages $0.49.
Three-star hotels average $79 per night, which is slightly above the Mexico study average of $77. However, Oaxaca City’s lower day-to-day costs help balance the overall trip budget, especially for travelers planning to eat out and explore during their stay.
2. Veracruz: Mexico’s cheapest hotel stay
Veracruz places second overall, with a budget score of 8.50 out of 10. Its biggest advantage is the cost of accommodation, with three-star hotels averaging $50 per night, the lowest hotel price in the Mexico study.
The value continues beyond the hotel price, too. A local draft beer averages $2.29, and a one-way public transportation fare costs just $0.54, so you can keep spending low while still making the most of your time in the city.
Private airport transfers start at $98, which is the highest transfer cost in the Mexico ranking. Even with this higher arrival cost, Veracruz’s low hotel prices and affordable everyday spending help make it one of the cheapest summer travel destinations in the study.

3. Puebla: Low hotel costs and a more affordable arrival
Puebla gives you one of the easiest starts in Mexico’s top three. Three-star hotels average $52 per night, only slightly higher than in Veracruz, while private airport transfers start at $47, making the journey from airport to city less expensive than in both Oaxaca City and Veracruz.
Once you’re in the city, Puebla’s costs are easy to work with. Meals average $11.43 at an inexpensive restaurant, and public transport fares sit at $0.57, giving visitors enough flexibility to move between the city’s historic center, local food stops, and cultural sights without the daily budget feeling too tight.
Puebla’s lowest private airport transfer price is $47, making it cheaper for arrival than both Oaxaca City and Veracruz. Its attraction density is lower, at 2.9 budget-friendly attractions per 100,000 people, but strong prices across hotels, transport and transfers keep it high in the ranking.

In Mexico, Veracruz offers the lowest hotel price in the study at $50 per night. That low room rate helps explain why it ranks second overall, even though private airport transfers are more expensive here than in any other Mexican destination analyzed. Methodology
hoppa is a global airport transportation aggregator helping travellers reach destinations across the US and beyond, including locations outside major cities. As interest in affordable European breaks is very popular, hoppa has created this report to highlight the US and Mexico’s cheapest summer holiday destinations.
We created a list of popular US and Mexican cities and created a normalized score out of 10 based on the following factors:
1. Average three-star hotel cost
We used booking.com to get the average 3-star hotel costs for each city. We converted these figures from Euros (€) to Dollars ($) on the 29.06.2026 at an exchange rate of 1.14213178.
2. Average price of a pint
We took the average price of ‘domestic draught beer (0.5 liter)’ from Numbeo.
3. Average price of a meal out
We took the average costs for ‘meal at an inexpensive restaurant’ from Numbeo.
4. Cheapest private car transfer cost
We used hoppa to find the cheapest private transfer, using the most popular airport for each city and the city center as our start and end points. The date we used for our quotes was 9:30am on June 13th, 2026.
5. Average public transport costs
We took the costs for a ‘one-way ticket (local transport)’ from Numbeo.
6. Number of budget-friendly attractions
We used Tripadvisor to get the number of attractions for each city, using the ‘budget-friendly’ filter.
All data is accurate as of June 2026.
Note: Any destinations that were under a travel advisory of level 3 or above (as of June 2026) were removed from the dataset.
