Kourkoumelata Kefalonia: The village of Kourkoumelata is one of the prettiest villages of the island of Kefalonia and is located 10 kilometers from the capital. Kourkoumelata is set in of the lush, green Livathos region in the south east of Kefalonia.

There has been a settlement at Kourkoumelata for thousands of years but it is the village more is more recent history for which it is famed.

The great earthquake of 1953 left nothing standing in Kourkoumelata. Like most villages on Kefalonia all the residents were left homeless, including the wealthy ship-owning Vergotis family. Giorgios Vergotis funded the rebuild of the whole village. It took several years to complete the building. The cafe was first to be built in order to feed construction workers.

The Vergotis family continued to help villagers, paying water rates for many years. Their only proviso was that villagers had to plant and maintain their gardens, which they still do today.
