For sun, sea and sand, Crete certainly delivers. The village of Paleochora sits on a peninsula on its southern coast. Sticking out into the warm waters of the Libyan Sea, here you’ll find two beaches, pebbly or sandy depending on which side of the peninsula you decide to head to.

Paleochora is full of Greek charm with pretty white washed houses, a tree lined boardwalk and bougainvillea draped over anything that stands still. The village was popular with hippies travelling around Greece back in the 70s and it still retains a laidback vibe.

During the day you can lounge on the beach, go snorkelling in the Libyan Sea or take a dolphin spotting boat trip. If you fancy something a bit more historical, local churches boast Venetian and Byzantine wall paintings while the Castel Selino (built in the 13th Century) is a great spot for watching the sunset. In the evening, head to one of Paleochora’s restaurants, bars or traditional tavernas or watch a movie in the village’s open air cinema. This is the kind of place where you just can’t help but relax.
