Once only known as a stop over for backpackers trekking through Southeast Asia, Laos is increasingly becoming a beloved destination in its own right. Waves of visitors can testify to the country’s stunning natural environment, remarkably relaxed atmosphere and locals who take friendly to a whole new level. Foodies, eco-lovers and culture-craving visitors will all find a pocket of Laos that satisfies their travel bug.

Fly into Wattay International Airport just a few kilometres outside the capital of Vientiane and start getting to know this vibrant riverside city immediately. French colonialism left its mark on Vientiane, which is evident in the crumbling colonial buildings and French inspired cuisine dished up inside local markets. The most  like famous being the Morning Market which is delightfully crammed with steamy food stalls and quirky trinkets. Visit some of the many Buddhist temples like Pha That Luang or the Hindu temple of Wat Si Muang for a taste of the country’s religious diversity. The beautiful Buddha Park lies just outside the city, straddling the Mekong River. The park is a lovely green space perfect for a stroll or picnic.

A short flight to Luang Prabang International Airport and you are in the heart of Laotian culture. Luang Prabang is Laos’ foremost tourist centrepiece and rests high above sea level amidst a densely forested backdrop of rolling mountains, ideal for hiking. As UNESCO’s first Heritage site in Laos, the city is well maintained and practically every street makes a postcard-worthy picture. The most visited attractions in Luang Prabang are; the Royal Palace Museum, the Wat Xieng Tuong Monastery and the Vipassana Temple and Park. Just outside the city are several elephant sanctuaries where visitors can feed, ride and learn about the endangered Asian Elephant.

For other photo worthy sites, visitors should travel to the more remote locales of Laos. Three stunning examples are: Si Phan Don, a beautiful set of islands on the Mekong River; the astounding Xe Bang Fai river caves; and the Plain of Jars, where large stone jars of unknown origin litter the landscape.
