Agdal (Marrakesh) Transfers, Taxis & Shuttles

Agdal (Marrakesh)

A wealthy suburb of Morocco’s capital city of Rabat, Agdal provides visitors with a quiet escape from the usual chaos of the nearby towns and cities. This happening urban community is home to many English and French expatriates, as well as some wealthy Moroccans. The energy here is noticeably laid-back, surprising for a capital city, however the buzz of cosmopolitan Casablanca resonates along the coast to Rabat. Many tourists pass the capital by for Morocco’s better-known cities, however you’ll find you’ve uncovered a true gem when visiting Rabat, as you walk from the palm-lined boulevards among colonial architecture to the medina and traditional Moroccan buildings.

There is a rich history to be discovered in the city, particularly around the port that was in fact used by Barbary pirates throughout the 16th to 18th centuries. A walk along the Bou Regreg Marina will lead to many historical and cultural landmarks, including the esplanade of the Hassan Tower and the Chellah necropolis. Further west along the Bou Regreg river are cafés and restaurants, providing serene spots from which to watch the passing boats. The Kasbah of the Udayas, located at the mouth of the river, was built in the 12th century and tells the early tale of Rabat’s founding and is worth visiting during your stay in Agdal.

The medina in Rabat is noticeably calmer than those found in Marrakech and Casablanca, though it doesn’t lack the same Moroccan charm. Wander around the souks, shops and cafés at your own pace without being hassled by traders and merchants. Traditional Moroccan carpets, embroidery and leather goods can be bought from many of the craft shops here, though you may simply enjoy walking down the narrow lanes and taking in the beautiful architecture.

In stark contrast to the medina is the Ville Nouvelle (New City), home to the Archaeological Museum and Postal Museum – a more exciting exhibit than you might expect! Across the river is Salé, a city of whitewashed buildings with an equally fascinating history as Rabat. The elegant buildings and monuments that reveal the city’s past include the Salé Medersa and the Great Mosque of Salé, which should be at the top of your must-see list.
